Tools and materials needed for hanging a door

Before you start to hang your door, it’s helpful to gather all the essential tools and materials you need for the job together. Have them at hand so you can complete each stage without stopping to find equipment.

Here’s a list of the tools and materials you need to hang a door:

  • Screws. These will secure the door in place.

  • Hinges. If you’re replacing an internal door, try and use the same size hinges for ease.

  • Screwdrivers. You may need different sized screwdriver heads for different parts of the job.

  • Hammers. A hammer will help you drive door nails into the frame.

  • Measuring tape. Measuring the door and any hinge space will help you fit the door accurately.

  • Chisel. A sharp chisel will make small cuts into the door wood, rather than larger ones.

  • Drill for driving screws.

  • Door handle

  • Planer. A planer or power planer will trim doors into shape.

  • Safety glasses. These will protect your eyes from any dust or debris.

You might want to look at some tool guides or explore types of hammers and their uses before you start work.

Planning and preparation to hang a door

When you’re planning and preparing how to fit a door, it’s critical to get the measurements and position of the door right before you start. Precise measurement and preparation can reduce the chance of any errors when hanging a door. Tape measures help to pinpoint the exact measurements you need for hanging a door.

Follow these steps for planning and preparing to hang a door:

  • Measuring the door frame.

  • Selecting the right door size.

  • Positioning the door hinges.

Measuring the door frame

It’s a good idea to measure the frame properly to ensure the new door fits. If you still have the old door, you can measure the height, width and depth of this. If you don’t have an existing door, measure the height and width of the door frame. To do this, measure the left and right vertical sides for the height and the top, middle and bottom of the frame to get the width.

Once you have measurements, use the largest set to determine the new door size and round up to the nearest standard door size. This is important as you can always trim the door to fit.

Selecting the right door size

Once you’ve found a door range, check the size options for the one you want to select. Round up to the next standard door size rather than down as you can always trim the door to size. For example, if your door space measures at (H)1976mm (W)760mm (T)31mm, the next standard door size would be (H)1981mm (W)762mm (T)35mm.

If the door needs to be trimmed, check the manufacturer’s instructions to see how much you can remove. Mark the sizes on the door where you need to trim with a pencil. Use a planer or track saw to cut off the required amount and work along the wood grain for a smooth finish and a straight cut.

Positioning the door hinge

Before fitting door hinges, measure where to position them on the frame and the new door so these align. If you’re using existing hinge spaces, measure where these are on the frame from the top and the bottom. Mark these measurements on the face edge of the door in pencil.

When using a new position, internal doors should have two hinges placed between 125-150mm (5-6in) from the top and 175-230mm (7-9in) from the bottom. Have the reverse side of the hinge facing you and the ball part facing the door and mark this position with a pencil.

Depending on the types of hinge being used, you may want 3 hinge positions on the door, the third hinge should be equally spaced between the top and bottom hinge, rather than in the middle of the door.

Hanging a door step-by-step

For learning all about how to hang a door confidently, use our easy and clear step-by-step guide so your work looks professional.

Follow this clear guide:

  1. Remove the old door (if applicable)

  2. Prepare the new door

  3. Mark the hinges

  4. Fit the hinges

  5. Hang the door on the frame

Step 1. Remove the old door (if applicable)

If there’s still an old door in place, you’ll need to safely remove this before you begin hanging a door. Remember to handle the door cautiously to avoid any splinters, damage or injury. Prop the door open with wedges to keep it still. Unscrew the screws fastening the hinge to the frame.

Loosen the hinge pins from the hinges a little using a screwdriver. Don’t take them all the way out at this point. Then, unscrew the hinge pins from the bottom hinge all the way first. Make sure the door is still stable. Now unscrew the top hinge pins completely. The door should now be free of the frame. Lay it down flat somewhere safe.

Step 2. Prepare the new door

There’s a chance that when you’re hanging a door, it won’t fit perfectly straight away. In this situation, you need to measure and trim the new door. Begin by measuring your door frame again so that you know the exact measurements required. You can do this by measuring the left and right vertical frames. Then measure the width of the frame at the top, in the middle and at the bottom. These will give you the required size for your new door.

If you need to trim the door, you can use your choice of circular saw or a planer for this. Mark the amount you need to trim off with a pencil. Begin to gently saw or plane the door at this point, always going with the wood grain for an even finish.

Step 3. Mark the hinges

Mark where the hinges will go on the door with a pencil. If you’re using the existing door hinges, measure where these are on the frame and use this measurement to mark the door for hinges.

If you’re putting in two new hinges, these should be 125-150mm (5-6in) from the top for the top hinge and 175-230mm (7-9in) from the bottom for the bottom hinge.

Make sure that the door frame is clean and prepared for the new door fitting. The hinge spaces should be free of any debris for a trouble-free installation.

Step 4. Fit the hinges

As you’ve already marked where the hinges will go on the frame and the door, the next step is to fit the hinges ready for hanging the door. If the hinge recesses (also called mortices) haven’t been made yet, place the hinge in position on the edge of the door and lightly score around it with a utility knife. This will mark the outline. Use a chisel to carefully remove a thin layer of wood within the marked area so the hinge sits flush. Repeat the same process on the door frame if it hasn’t already been morticed.

Once the recesses are ready, hold the hinge in place on the door frame and line up the screw holes. Insert the screws and gently tighten them using a screwdriver or drill. Avoid overtightening, as this can damage the wood.

Repeat this process for all of the hinges on the door frame.

Next, hold the door up to the frame and align the hinges with the marks on the door to check everything lines up correctly. When you’re ready to hang the door, use packers or spacers to hold it in the right position and maintain even gaps around the edges. A door lifter can also help you adjust the height and keep the door steady while you secure it.

Step 5. Hang the door on the frame

Now the hinges are attached to the frame, you can hang the door. To do this, position the door in the frame with the hinge spaces aligned. Doors can be heavy, so you may need some help with the final fitting.

You can make sure that the door is square and well positioned by using a spirit level or carpenter’s square if you have one. Once the door is in the correct position, tighten the screws fully into the hinges. Then insert screws into the hinge holes on the door and tighten them in place for a level fit.

When it’s in place, test your door to ensure that it opens and closes properly and you’re happy with the result. You’ve now learned how to fit an internal door. The next step would be to fit a new door handle and latch. This is a relatively simple process, if you don’t know how to fit a door handle or haven’t fitted one before.

How to hang different door types

You may be fitting different types of doors into your home. For example, if you want to fit sliding doors, you’ll need to measure the width and height of the door opening so that the sliding doors can open fully. Then the bottom and top tracks for the doors need to be installed by measuring the area, drilling screw holes and attaching each track to the screws. You can then insert the door rollers into the tracks before you lift in and attach the door panels.

If you want to fit internal bifold doors, measure the space in the same way as you measure a standard door frame. The top track needs to be fitted 19mm back from the front edge of the door frame. At the bottom, you will fit a pivot bracket on the frame, also setting it 19mm back. Once these are in place, position the door and screw it into its hinges.

Fitting french doors will mean measuring both sides for the two doors just like fitting an internal door. You then need to make sure the mortise (hinge openings) on each side align with a spirit level. Take your frame measurements and mark these on the two doors. Then follow the hinge fitting and door hanging instructions for a standard door, but fit each door one at a time.

Tips for fitting an internal door

Being confident with how to fit an internal door just takes a bit of practice. If your new internal door is a little too large for the frame, have the exact measurements you need marked in pencil on the door. Use a power planer to trim the amount required. Once complete, sand down and test to see if the door fits more comfortably.

Smaller rooms can be a challenge if you want the door to swing open and shut with ease. Check and adjust hinges to make sure they align and are tight. You can bend the hinge pins slightly to gain some traction.

For optimum comfort and functionality, you’ll want to ensure proper door handle placement. A typical door handle is usually 100cm from the floor, so use this as a marker for your handle, unless you want to match other door handles in the space.

Many door handles come with a template which helps you position the handle accurately. Mark the exact drill holes and fix into place. Use a spirit level to make sure the handle is in the correct position. Before you start, it may be useful to research door handling fitting with this how to fit a door handle guide.

How to hang a door final touches and maintenance

Once your door is in place, you can make the final touches to get it looking perfect. A key aspect of how to fit a door is to make sure it operates smoothly which can take some maintenance from time to time.

A bit of aftercare can make all the difference to the upkeep of your internal door, such as:

  • Sanding down rough edges when needed using your chosen sanders

  • Applying paint or varnish to the door when it’s installed. If the door is damaged at any point, simply sand down that part of the door and apply a new coat of paint or varnish.

  • Lubricating hinges to ensure smooth operation. This can be done quite simply with a standard oil or lubricant

  • Checking the door alignment periodically. Use a spirit level to make sure the door is still hanging correctly and tighten the hinges slightly if they become loose.

Safety considerations when hanging a door

There are some important personal safety aspects to think about when you’re learning how to fit a door. Hanging a door involves heavy lifting, the use of power tools, and potential contact with sharp objects.

Here are a few safety tips to help protect anyone involved in hanging a door:

  • Wear eye protection, such as safety goggles, and a pair of work gloves when using power tools. This should keep any dust, dirt or debris out of your eyes and help to protect your hands if you handle sharp objects.

  • Ensure the work area is clear of obstructions. Keeping organised and removing anything you don’t need out of the area will reduce the chance of an accident.

  • Use a stable ladder or step stool if you’re working at a height from the floor so that you’re not stretching out of reach.

  • Work with a partner if the door is large or heavy. This will help you hang the door more quickly and accurately.
