Rated 1 out of 5 by from Worked at first. Now broken Worked well at first. Just home use, and only used a dozen or so times for an hour or so each time. Started using it again this week, 14 months after purchase and the sharp end snapped off, and is now quite useless. Thought this lump of metal was a one off purchase, especially for domestic use. Quite disappointed, and unhappy as Screwfix not able to do anything to help towards a replacement as it is over one year after purchase. Have replaced with a different brand. Not happy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It really does work! I bought the Wood Grenade recently along with two replacement chainsaw chains. We've got a number of old tree stumps in our back garden and some cut tree logs that needed splitting. I tried the Grenade on some cut logs, first with a big long handled sledge hammer (which turned out to be unnecessarily big) and then with a small hand held sledge hammer. Genuinely surprised at how little effort is needed to split logs; a superb tool that requires far less effort or precision than using an axe. Out of curiosity I tried it on some tree stumps. One was about a metre tall and a long time dead; it split easily and because the root had rotted I ended up being able to take the whole thing out in four pieces again with minimal effort. Another smaller one has been helpfully split up by the Grenade and then more easily chopped away with an axe. In my case this has been a surprisingly indispensable tool for splitting and breaking up old dry stumps as well as logs. Highly recommended.

Is there a maximum diameter this will be effective on please ?
Asked by: Proops
Hello, There isn't specific diameter that we can recommend, just a standard working log. The effectiveness of this wedge will also depend on the hardness of the wood and it should never be used on a damp wood, as it may stay lodged in the log. It is best paired up with 6lb maul and should be hit from the top and not diagonally as it may break at the tip. Good luck.

Would this be any good for splitting/removing a dead tree stump still in the ground?

Asked by: Metalmangler
Good morning — Metalmangler, Thank you for your question. Wood grenade is suitable for splitting loose logs thus it will not be suitable for removing tree stump. There are various methods used to remove tree stumps, such as tree stump slicer, saw, axe, salts, etc. We trust this helps.

To hit this with a sledgehammer as described in the product info will mean two hands on the do you hold the grenade upright?....or do you need to tap it into the wood with a lump hammer first to hold it in place? Thanks

Asked by: gbs125
I have used these for a few years. Often I use a wrecking saw to put slices through the top of the log and invariable tapping the wedge in then works well. If would is hard a 25mm wood drill makes a small hole that starts the wedge off well.

Half logs?

I can see how the grenade will work when placed in the centre of a whole log splitting it into quarters. Can it also be used to split a half log?
Asked by: JerryR
Good afternoon JerryR, Thank you for your question. Wood grenade can be used on any size dry log or parts of log to split it into smaller chunks. It works best when used with 6lb/8lb splitting maul or sledge hammer and must be used by hitting it from the top. Please avoid slanted blows as this will break your wedge by tip point and always wear safety goggles and protective clothing. We hope this helps. Kind regards.
