Rated 4 out of 5 by from Quality product I bought this to grout external porcelain tiles. Did a great job once I got into the swing of things. Sturdy construction and built to last. Repointing is it’s next task!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Nearly adequate I had a job fixing brick-slips in a prominent position & wanted the pointing to look neat so I thought a pointing gun would help avoid any mess. Made the mix was on the wet side & to start with, the gun was brilliant - but after discharging about a third of the tube it stopped. The mix in the tube was a solid lump, too solid to squeeze through the (large) nozzle. So, I emptied the tube, added a dash of water to the 'lump' and began again. Again it was a dream to start with, but again it stopped. This was becoming a regular occurrence. Although the job looked really nice, the problems caused by the drying of the mortar meant loads of mess and it was very time consuming as the gun needed cleaning for each watered-down refill. The cause of the problem is now obvious - when under pressure, mortar solidifies, and this is what was happening inside the tube, so, obviously this gun WILL NEVER WORK PROPERLY with mortar - see the reviews, they're very mixed, but the majority of poor reviews involve mortar.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Roughneck Mortor Gun Saves hours and hours on paving pointing with hardly any cleaning the joints afterwards, brilliant bit of kit but I did need to modify a kitchen funnel to load it ! Why no loading system included in the kit, overall would highly recommend.

Which way to connect the nozzle holder.

I connected the nozzle holder into the retaining nut as shown on the picture on the packaging. On the packaging the rubber seal is on the outside of the tube. Is this correct? I've just wasted 2 hours, a tub of mortar mix and made an awful mess.

Good afternoon — KashG, Thank you for highlighting your observation with us. The product image at the front of the box is showing incorrect assembly, indeed. We are currently reviewing all our packaging design and materials; I have received a confirmation from our marketing team that the new packaging will be showing correct assembly. This will be available in our range early part of next year. Regarding achieving the correct mortar mixture: Firstly, it is important that you only use the black nozzles for mortar mix and not the white grouting nozzle, which is for tiling grout only. Building sand is not always the correct material to use, as this description does not always suggest you are getting SOFT Building Sand. The best way to test that you are using the correct sand, is to rub the palm of your hand with the sand, if it stains your palm orange then you have soft building sand. This should ideally be mixed 3-4 parts sand to 1 part cement, keep adding enough water and plasticizer to bind the mix together to ensure a smooth, creamy texture. Please note that building sand must be never used with the gun as it is too coarse, which causes mixture to release the water and clogs up the gun. Trust this helps.

Does the accessories kit fit this gun aswell?

Asked by: NSJbuildingservices
Good morning — NSJbuildingservices, Thank you for your question. The Ultimate Mortar Gun kit comes with various accessories as per image. There are additionally 2 separate accessories kits available for this gun but not from Screwfix. The spares kits are either Nylon Brush for cleaning or Nozzles and Plungers Kit (including 5 white grouting nozzles, 5 plungers with cut and 2 plungers without the cut). There is traditional Mortar Gun available from Screwfix (SKU 67965) and the spares kits compatible with this gun are: 74730, 69397 & 27799, all available from Screwfix. We trust this helps.

As this product (1983T) is a lot more expensive than the other Gun 967965), what aditional features does it have to warrant such a large price difference e.g. can gritty sand be used such as in pointing stonework.

Asked by: Boobykins
Good afternoon — Boobykins, Thank you for your question. The main difference between the silver and black gun is the make and variety of applications. Brick Mortar Gun (67965) has been in our range for many years now and proven to be a very popular gun. The Ultimate Mortar Gun (1983T) is recent addition to our range. The black gun is superior to the silver gun, it has been described as collectors’ item. Silver gun is slightly lighter (0.63kg) whereas the black gun weights 0.90kg due to more aluminium used in the product, making it stronger and more durable gun. The black gun can additionally be used as caulking and sausage gun, so the number of applications is higher. Both guns have 15'' aluminium tube and 1 L capacity. When using both guns as mortar guns, the key is to achieve correct mixture: Firstly, it is important that you only use the orange nozzles for mortar mix and not the white grouting nozzle when using 67965, which is for tiling grout only. Building sand is not always the correct material to use, as this description does not always suggest you are getting Soft Building Sand. The best way to test that you are using the correct sand, is to rub the palm of your hand with the sand, if it stains your palm orange then you have soft building sand. This should ideally be mixed 3-4 parts sand to 1 part cement and plasticizer used to bind the mix together to ensure a smooth, creamy texture. Please note that sharp building sand must be never used. We trust this helps.
