Flow problem
I just fitted this trap, and it is not free draining. If i remove cup assembly, then water drains freely. but with cup installed, in place, shower tray just fills with water.

I can't give you an answer to this but I can confirm that I have had the exact same problem and have similarly had to remove the internal cup as it won't drain properly with this installed. Other than to get in the way of the water, I don't know what the purpose of this cup is?

How is this tightened have I read right that there is a tool?

Good question, just bought one and thought, glad I’m not the only person struggling with the cheep ones. Answer- not required! It has sensible size lugs you can do up by hand, or if you really want, you can put a spanner or screwdriver shaft across the lugs to get a bit more oomph

Compared to fluidmaster, is the McAlpine really worth the extra money.

Yes.
After wasting hours trying to fit the cheep one to a thick cast base shower , bought the MaAlpine. Never had problems with their stuff and this lives up to expectations.
Different thickness sealing washers provided for thick shower bases.
Much longer threaded section making doing up this trap very easy.
Sensible lugs to get hold off to tighten.
This one installed in 2 minutes. What price for a wasted morning?
Re-assuringly expensive?
