What is a consumer unit and how does it work?

How a consumer unit is wired: the professional process
To wire a consumer unit, an electrician will follow a structured set of steps. Some of these include parts that can be done by a confident DIYer, though other parts must be done or checked by a professional.
Isolating and preparing the installation
Before an electrician can begin to wire a domestic consumer unit or consumer board, they must first isolate the power. To do this, they switch off and lock off the main switch, proving the circuit is dead with an approved voltage tester.
They’ll use this voltage tester on a proving unit before and after checking each terminal to ensure the circuit is completely disconnected.
After which, they’ll mount the new metal enclosure in an accessible, dry location with clearance for future access and cable entry glands.
This part of the process is one that a competent DIYer will be able to do themselves.
Connecting the supply and fitting the protective devices
Next, the electrician will feed the incoming tails through a gland, connecting the live and neutral wires to the main switch and bonding the earth wire.
They will then clip the RCDs, RCBOs, and MCBs onto the busbar. The 18th Edition Wiring Regulations guide favours individual RCBOs per circuit over one shared RCD, as this reduces nuisance tripping. It also states that a qualified electrician must confirm Type A vs Type AC selection for each circuit’s load.
This stage is one that must be carried out by, or under the direct supervision of, a registered electrician.
Wiring in the final circuits
Installing a new electrical circuit requires running a continuous cable from the appliance or point of use all the way back to the consumer unit. Inside the board, connect the brown live wire directly into the output terminal of your chosen MCB or RCBO, route the blue neutral wire into the matching neutral terminal for that specific device, and fix the green-and-yellow earth wire securely into the main earth block.
Crucially, the earth wire must bypass all breaker switches, and you must never connect the neutral wire of one circuit to the neutral wire of another.
An example of an instance where you’d need to add a new circuit is wiring in a dedicated EV charger circuit onto its own RCBO.
Testing and certification
After the wiring of the consumer unit is complete, the electrician will test and certify their work.
At this point, the electrician will label every pathway on the circuit chart and run multiple tests before issuing any certification. The tests conducted are:

Once these have all been passed, the electrician will issue an Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC) before the consumer unit can be used. Plastic vs metal consumer units: which do you need?
Since Amendment 3 of the 17th edition, all new domestic consumer units must be made from non-combustible material, i.e., metal. This is because plastic units were linked to house fires spreading from electrical faults. Older plastic units do not need to be replaced, though, so long as they are safe, but any new installation will mean a metal consumer unit is fitted.
Common consumer unit wiring mistakes to avoid
There are a few common mistakes that can occur when wiring a consumer unit. This is one of the reasons why it is necessary to have a registered electrician carry out or supervise the work:

Sharing a neutral across two circuits – This keeps a wire dangerously live even after you turn off the fuse, causing unexpected electric shocks and instant fuse board tripping.
