Rated 4 out of 5 by OnceandDone from Simple 3 pin socket with RCBO As others have noted, nothing 'special' to this 3 pin socket with an RCBO, but it will charge your EV (slowly) and has the added safety of the built in RCBO. Reasonable quality and easy to fit, if rather expensive for what it adds to a 'normal' 3 pin external socket. This has no separate switch on the socket so need to use the RCBO to isolate. The plastic seems a little brittle and the closing mechanism is stiff, but all works well. Can't comment on reliability as only fitted for about a week.

You can use manufacturers mode 2 cables( in line protection) with a dedicated EV socket circuit using a property 13A EV socket. Also using a type B RCD Or a type A with a DC monitoring unit. Also very dependent on DNO supply type,T- T,TN-S, TNC-S

It is basically a 13A Mains Socket that is to BS1363 and is suitable for electric vehicle charging. The socket is protected by a RCBO unit and can be mounting indoors or outdoors. If you are going to use it to charge an electric vehicle you will need an appropriate charging unit that supports MODE 2 charging at 2.3kW and is fitted with a standard 13A UK 3 Pin Plug. That 13A plug fits into the socket of this unit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by normandy from This is all many EV users need This is an excellent low-cost, easy to install solution (just add to your ring main) for EV owners who do not want the cost and possible complications of fitting a 7.2 kw charger (even going down the government grant route they will end up costing you around £500). Charging off a 13amp socket (up to 3kw) is perfectly practical esp if you have overnight off-road parking. Come home, plug in, and it's full in the morning. I have been doing this for 2 years for my Leaf and Tesla. I can add up to 100 miles overnight. And slower charging is kinder to your battery! Recommended.

ring circuit

can this be wired off the mains rings the same as normal outdoor socket or does it require a dedicated circuit from board

Hi cmcc, As long as the circuit is able to cope with the demands the EV will put on it, and is protected by at least a type A RCD or RCBO as per the requirements of the 18th Edition of the wiring regulations, then there shouldn't be any issues from wiring the socket in that way.

Which SPD will fit inside

You say that this device comes with space for fitting a surge protection device (SPD). Can you highlight a product that would fit inside? My electrician can’t find one.

I've just bought a CP Fusebox SPD to see if it will fit (new version is a single slot size). As it is a passive device, you should be able to use in any brand of board.

System earthing

Hi, Is there a system to monitor line voltage and neutral voltage. If no monitoring, will the socket have to have its own TT earth rod as per vehicle charging requirements ??

I've just been researching this before purchase. After a lot of digging it looks like the 3 pin plug VW charger supplied with my Golf GTE has built in earth fault detection - there is a warning light on the black box. It also has overheating monitoring. The car has residual DC protection. So I believe that with that granny charger supplied with my car I don't need an earth rod. I'm not a qualified electrician so you should check your charger and check with a professional if you're in any doubt.

Is the RCC in this Type A, Type AC, or Type B.

Is the RCD component of the RCBO type A or type AC or type B? Note I am not asking about what type the MCB is (B). I understand RCD Type A or type B is the minimum requirement for EV charging as both of these function in the presence of DC.

I have installed one of these. Even though this socket has an AC type RCD the Ohme charger I use has a type A 30ma RCD with 6ma DC protection built in. So the socket just needs overload protection for the Ohme. So check what protection the charger has built in. If no DC protection use a type A or type B RCBO at the consumer unit to power this master plug. I wish the manufacturers would say "B curve" and not type B as it causes confusion. This product is a type AC RCD with B curve. It should really be type A which is type AC with DC protection.
