The ring on the rear of the box is not a sealing ring but rather a ring for sealant to be applied to so that fluid does not leak in through the rear opening (when it is made), it is actually more accurately two rings with a slight gap between the inner and outer ones so that silicon sealant (or similar) will get a good bond on the box.
Yes, the intention of this entry is exactly for a direct cable connection out of the wall of the building it is fixed to.
