Rated 2 out of 5 by from Dives in Bought this to drill holes in the bottom of old wine barrels to be used as planters – I bought extra long bit in case I need it for some future job. With both battery and mains powered drills it just dives into the wood and then stalls. The issue I think is with the auger point – the screw thread pulls the drill down too quickly. So I drilled a 6mm pilot hole, drilled the first few mm using this bit (to locate the hole accurately) and then drilled right through with an 8mm bit followed by this bit – what a palaver. The maximum depth you can then drill is limited by the length of the pilot hole bit. Hence only 2 stars.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Does the job... I can't knock the quality or the price, but it's got that touch of being designed by somebody who does not use the product. It is 25mm precisely all the way down its length. No hint of clearance. When it binds, you'd better have a powerful drill behind it... And effectively it's not 400mm long. It would have been nice to describe it by the depth of hole it could drill, rather than the pedantic physical length of the drill.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Extra length required Standard flat bit was just too short for drilling cable hole thro Socket box hole into sole plate in existing stud wall. This drill bit was good value and allowed me to install socket without damaging wall. I’ve only used twice but cuts nice and cleanly. No sway or grab like an extended flat bit would do, I’m glad I chose this one. Note requires full size chuck and power, I used adapter on SDS drill no problem at all. Hope this will continue to perform for many holes to come!

How powerful a drill (W) do I need for a bit of this size to drill into unseasoned logs?

Hello Logburner, A higher wattage doesn't necessarily mean a better drill, just that it needs that power to turn the motor. A poor motor using lots of wattage will not be better than a lower wattage, better quality motor. It will also depend on how hard the material the logs are made of are. Use a high wattage, good quality drill and you should be able to drill them. Thank you for using Q&A.
