Rated 4 out of 5 by from Dual filter We are supplied from a limestone aquifer and have had longstanding limescale problems. I read up on various treatments and took a punt on polyphosphate sequestration. Do your own research first. This polyphosphate cartridge has made a noticeable difference to water quality for washing / showering, more lather and less limescale deposition, cant say i've seen other any longer term benefits such as tap or shower head scale reduction but only been a few weeks. Will also be interesting to see how much sediment the 5 micron filter catches after 6 months or so. A few points to note on installation; i mounted these filters to a plywood panel with a honeywell pressure reducing valve as we have 5.5 bar mains supply, i leak tested the filters at 5 bar prior to mounting the panel on the wall and plumbing into the house and now run them at 4.5 bar, one of the red venting valves leaked under test. I had to remove the vent valve and invert the rubber sealing washer, it had a bit plastic swarf stuck in it which had distorted the rubber sealing face. Pita if id been doing this once they were installed. Id also prefer brass connecting nipples to be supplied instead of plastic. Id also recommend using full bore ball valves to install with rather than cheaper reduced bore valves to minimise flow restrictions .

Rated 5 out of 5 by from job-well-done I fitted this to my sister's house as her water is so hard her disco shower head would stop working after one shower fitted this but replaced the salt with a carbon filter. Yes I know limescale to remove in full needs the salt but she has a young child so salt no go. Anyway after doing this shower head work's fine and kettle is just like using britar filter for water for drinking so all working good. Easy to fit and if it dose this for shower and kettle has to be doing good for the boiler and other house hold goods.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from misinformation oddjob01's suggestion that this has got anything to do with salt is total rubbish. Salt is used in large water softeners with ion exchange resins to remove calcium and magnesium, and only to regenerate. The scale reduction chemical is sodium polyphoshate which mops up the calcium - if you want to remove tastes get a carbon filter-if you want to remove metals, get a resin based cartridge. I wouldn't drink polyphosphate even if it is food grade. Incidentally, NPT is the American standard for pipe threads and is completely different to BSP - the only threads to will interchange are 1/8 NPT and 1/8 BSP - anything bigger won't. You wn't stand a chance with 3/4" NPT and don't bother asking the plumber's merchant for an adaptor.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Should have had one years ago Live in a hard water area and always had a problem with scale deposits. Over the last year we have noticed that the scale was starting to have a red tint. After spending several thousand on a new bathroom I wasn't prepared to suffer this any longer. This system is good value, there isn't a noticeable drop in pressure and flow. The polyphosphate is food grade but you can taste a slight difference. Not a problem if you fit a cheap filter tap to your kitchen sink. The instructions do state that it is recommended that drinking water is taken off before the filter. In my house impossible. The only downside, is that I have it fitted in a cellar and because of the size of it I was getting a lot of condensation on it. It is now fully insulated and no more problems.

How long do the filters last?

How often do these filters need to be replaced and what is the cost of them? Would this also help soften limescale that has already built up?
Asked by: Fire
We recommend these filters to be changed; every 3-6 months for the sediment filter (69860) and every 12 months for the polyphosphate filter (88345). This system will not help with already built up limescale. Prices for these can be found by searching the respective codes.

Does the carbon filter also remove lead?

I was wondering whether this filter can also remove lead? Also, does it remove 10 microns and above sediments as it says in the description or 5 microns and above as it says in the manual?
Asked by: AndreiC
Thank you for contacting BWT UK Ltd. The filter is not designed for Lead removal. I does appear that there is a mistake in the description, the cartridge is 5 micron rated. We will get the description changed, thank you for letting us know.

Can this filter be combined with a carbon filter?

If a carbon filter was put inline after the 2-stage filter, could it then be used to supply drinking water? Or would the carbon neutralise the effect of the inhibitor?
Asked by: 1Bob1
Unfortunately water which has been filtered by this 2 stage system is unsuitable for use as drinking water due to the Polyphosphate used not being food grade. The addition of a carbon filter would not alter this.

Which housing do you feed in first?

Would it be possible to feed the mains into the polyphosphate filter first and then into the carbon filter second to try and soften the salt taste at the taps?
Asked by: Ian2009
The BWT 2 Stage Whole House Scale Reduction System is supplied with a 5 micron sediment (not carbon) filter cartridge which acts as a pre-filter to be installed before the polyphosphate cartridge. *Please note, the filter cartridges do not contain salt*. We would recommend that a minimum of one tap is left as an untreated source (drinking water). This is usually the kitchen sink cold supply. Installation instructions are available on the product page for your reference.

Our plumber has installed this filter but has not separated the drinking water supply. Is the water safe to drink?

Asked by: Som1234
We would recommend that a minimum of one tap be left as a source of untreated water (drinking water). The BWT 2 Stage Whole House Scale Reduction system doses a small amount of polyphosphate into your water supply to inhibit the build up of scale. Although this is food grade polyphosphate and is perfectly safe for human consumption, we would recommend that it is NOT used for treating water for drinking or cooking purposes.
