Rated 5 out of 5 by from Quick & Simple Having installed a different type a few months ago I went to install 7 of these TRVs as the property already has Hive. Straight forward and quickly installed. I liked the option where you could buy the complete TRV if need be and not just the head. One slight mishap with Bedroom 2 that as soon as it was paired lost its ability to connect via wifi. Handy app enabled me to work through troubleshooting but it seemed a faulty device. 1 issue which was solved very quickly with Screwfix help.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Waste of time and money These are without doubt the worst gadgets I’ve ever used. They are a pain to set up and they drop off or need recalibrating on an almost weekly basis. Recalibrating takes 4hours and can only be done while the heating is on. Reinstalling them after they go offline requires manually resetting them by taking the batteries out. In 4 months we have not yet had a single week where one ir more didn’t require attention. Very expensive mistake. Stick with the standard TRVs.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from I am sure you can do better Lack of real control is the problem here. 1. you never know when a firmware update may happen - no email or anything in the app. 2. you have to recallibrate after a firmware update but you don’t know when that is. 3. the temperature reported is way off. Often reports a far higher temp than reality. I have calibrated room thermometers that tell me the truth. 4. in some cases you have to set the temperature artificially high to get the room to heat up. 5. once you start to heat the room up the TRV jumps up and reports a higher temperature so the room never heats up. It seems to me that the TRV has no “intelligence” and just measures the heat coming from the radiator So do they save you money? Well, yes, but only because they stop your rooms heating up. I would like to know when a firmware update is about to be applied and I would like to know what that firmware update is for and be given an option NOT to apply it. Until the issues above are resolved I would avoid.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not smart radiator valves Disappointing radiator valves. Smart obvious refers that it is connected to the internet, but for the rest it is rather stupid. It often overshoots the requested temperature despite its smart calibration. Unless you allow it to heat-on-demand (basically overriding the main thermostat) it is not possible to give a little bit of heat in cooler rooms (bedrooms) when the main thermostat is in warm room (living room). Switching heat-on-demand on the radiator valves regularly resulted in ridiculous hot room with main thermostat since the cooler rooms forced the heating come on. Must be some kind of ploy to force you put a smart valve on every radiator. Another thing is that lose internet connection regularly and reconnecting is a bit of a hassle.

Does this require a smart hub?

Does this require a smart hub or could it be used using just wifi (or mobile hotspot) via smart phone?
Asked by: JESMcA
Hi there, Yes, The Hive TRV's do require a Hive Hub so they can connect to the Hive app. You can find further information about the system requirements on our website, https://www.hivehome.com/ within 'Radiator Valve' section. The Hive Team.

Functionality

Can these be used to create a separate zone i.e. can they be turned off immediately when heating is on to stop heat in certain rooms? Thanks
Asked by: StephenWearen
Hi there, yeah that is the main functionality of the TRV's that we do, I would focus on what rooms you want to keep cool when thinking of them being placed in your house. I am linking our website with the details beneath for our TRV's Thanks, The Hive Team TRV link: https://www.hivehome.com/shop/smart-heating/hive-radiator-valve?icid=mname%3Amega-menu.iname%3Ahive-radiator-valve

Battery life

On average, how often would the batteries require replacing, and once replaced will the unit retain its link with the hub?
Asked by: Steveathome
Hi there, When you replace the batteries the thermostat would automatically reconnect to the Hive Hub and the receiver. The battery life really depends on how often you wake up the thermostat display - if you're mainly using the app and rarely touch touch the device should last you at least 12 months. We would always recommend using good quality batteries such as Duracell or Energizer and avoid using rechargeable ones. Thanks, The Hive Team
