Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Primer Used this to prime sanded down mahogany furniture with great results. Top coated with chalk paint and this primer prevented any bleeding. I used two coats for priming mahogany, but feel one coat would be more than adequate for lighter or untreated wood. I found it better to apply quickly to avoid any stretching of the paint. Brushes clean off well in white spirit. Have up cycled five pieces of mahogany furniture now and am currently on my sixth! Highly recommend this primer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best coverage found purchased this after a number of cheaper products failed to cover a water mark from a previous leak. This has done a brilliant job on first application. Not additional applications required. Ready to paint over in 24 hours. It’s a bit pricey conspired to similar products but does a much better job. Don’t waste your money on cheaper products. Only a very small amount is needed, a small tin will go a long way.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Extremely good coverage. Used this to cover ceiling stains due to a water leak. Normal ceiling paint had no effect. A single coat of this and the stains have gone. Beware the fumes. Make sure the room is well ventilated as per the instructions on the tin.

Top coat time.

I'm using this to prime ply for an exterior sign. After approx 2.5 hours at 21 degrees the paint still feels soft. Should I wait until fully cured to sand/ begin top coat and lettering? I'll be using oil based paints.
Asked by: Danthepainter
Hello Thank you for your enquiry. Cover Stain may be over-coated after 2 hours and may still feel a little soft as this is still curing. If you are looking to apply your decorative top coat this may be applied at this time, although you may wish to wait for a while longer if you are looking to sand the surface. I hope this helps.

What is the lowest temperature this primer can be applied?

Asked by: CR231
Hello Thank you for your recent enquiry. Cover Stain may be applied when the air and substrate temperatures are 5 degrees C and rising with the humidity being less than 85%. The re-coat time for the product is 2 hours in normal drying conditions of 20 degrees C, this time will be extended in colder conditions. Once this has dried your choice of decorative top coat may be applied, oil or water based. I hope this helps.

Can I apply Insulation Boards on Top

I want to insulate the interior of a single brick outside wall in a utility room. Can I first use Cover Stain Primer to damp proof the wall before applying Kingspan or similar insulated boards.
Asked by: Cropping
Hi. Thanks for your enquiry. Any surface that the Cover Stain is applied to mustn't contain more than 12% moisture. The Cover Stain is for sealing a surface and blocking stains. For sealing damp into a masonry surfaces we have the Zinsser Watertite (2683P). This can hold back up to 34psi of water pressure. I hope this helps.

WATER BASED PRIMER/UNDERCOAT

Attempting to paint interior windows over Sadolins satin varnish. Finish paint is water-based eggshell. What type of primer/undercoat is needed? does it need to be water-based if the eggshell is water-based? or Zinsser coverstain?
Asked by: JoffTDA
Hi. Thanks for your enquiry. The Zinsser B-I-N (1 litre = 29661 or 2.5 litres = 10130) would be our best recommendation for this particular project. It has unparalleled adhesion to any surface providing great key without having to scuff sand. 1 or 2 coats of B-I-N primer is recommended, to be applied by brush or roller at a coverage rate of approx. 10m²/L/coat. Always ensure that the surface has been prepared this can be done by cleaning first with hot soapy water then rinse with fresh warm water to remove detergent and when dry a good wipe with methylated spirit. Once the B-I-N Primer has dried (minimum of 45 minutes) you can overcoat it with your chosen decorative topcoat, oil based or water based. Zinsser Perma-White Interior (matt = 1289G or satin 3939G) would be a suitable finishing coat. 2 coats are recommended to providing a durable, cleanable, long lasting decorative finish that stays white, does not yellow and can be over coated after a minimum of 2 hours. I hope this helps.

Suitable for old artex ceiling?

Can the product be used on an old, greasy/nicotine stained artex ceiling?
Asked by: Hannah80
Hi. Thanks for your enquiry. Yes, the Cover Stain would be ideal for this particular task. Before application we would advise on cleaning the surface as much as possible and wait for the surface to dry. Usually one coat of Cover Stain will do the job but if the satin is quite dark and the surface very porous a second coat may be required. Apply the Cover Stain at a coverage rate of 10m2/litre with either a brush or a roller allowing a minimum of 2 hours between coats or before a decorative finish is applied, this can be oil or water-based. I hope this helps.
