Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great outdoor socket I bought this double outdoor socket with rcb protection after reading other reviews. Great looking product, easy to fit, like the fact that both sockets have on/off switches which my old one didn't have.

Date published: 2020-05-20
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Locking clips not the best. I have had this socket on my outside wall for about 5 years but recently both locking clips broke off due to them being weathered. This now affects the integrity of the waterproofing. It would be very easy to replace them but apparently the manufacturer does not provide spare parts so it would mean replacing the whole unit. A better design of the clips could solve this.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good build quality Son-in-law installed the sockets easily and they seem strong and well built. As others have said if you have a circuit breaker as your plug it won't fit. I also found the left click on retainer difficult to open; expect it will ease up with use. Hoping to get many years of safe usage from it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Weatherproof Outdoor Switched I've had an outdoor socket for many years which had been damaged and had been looking for a replacement, this one was exactly what I needed and reasonably priced. It was practically a straight forward replacement.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Information on box incorrect Installed this outdoor socket only to find that the bright LED (as stated on the box) did not work. So took it back to Screwfix who happily exchanged it, only to find the LED on the replacement didn't work either. Turns out, from the support line, that the information on the box was incorrect and that there wasn't an LED at all but a mechanical display. Hey ho!! But the switch itself is very good, easy to install, works well and great that it has rcd protection. Could have had a 5*

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Product Good product, easily fitted and easy to operate although it won't take a RCD type plug if fitted to you appliance or extension lead.
Date published: 2019-12-09
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good value and well made I bought this weatherproof socket to provide RCD protection for a heavy duty outdoor extension lead. The case is well designed and should withstand knocks when used in harsh environments. There are 8 x 20mm removable knockouts on the sides (one on each side and 3 on top and bottom). There is also a reinforced area for drilling either a 20 or 25mm hole for rear cable entry, which is ideal for hidden wiring if mounting on a wall. In this application, I intend to fit a 20mm gland, using one of the predrilled knockouts. It might be a good idea to seal/glue the unused knockouts from the inside for portable use? The cover has good water ingress protection with screw cap covers and is provided with rubber seals for the screw holes if wall mounting. Cable entry points also have flexible rubber brushes to seal around appliance cords. Strong latches are also fitted on both sides of the cover, with a hole for a padlock if required. The socket itself appears to be a standard BG RCD faceplate, with the screw holes blanked off. Each of the sockets is switched swperately and the RCD is latched, which means it shouldn't need resetting following a mains failure. The RCD test and reset buttons are clearly marked. The indicator is a mechanical flag and therefore is best viewed at a slight angle to check it's status. The connections are clearly marked and colour coded, with two earth terminals if required. The overall quality appears to be comparable to MKs current range and comes at less than half the price!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Xmas lights sorted! Always brilliant service, order, pay, collect, can’t get any simpler! Product is great too. Fed up with the last one being temperamental and working when it felt like it. Great replacement.
Date published: 2019-12-03
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Bought to replace failed one Bought as a like-for-like replacement as the original one broke. The plastic earth pin in both sockets became chewed up by the (normal) plugs that were used with it and meant it became hard to use. Bought the same for ease of swap but with I'd got a more expensive brand name one first time.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Unreliable & failed Had this fitted for pond pump supply and air pump, since purchasing has frequently tripped out, luckily have been around to reset. Had already replaced pumps etc, checked for possible water ingress moisture, supply wiring etc. in socket box which was ok. now will not reset it keeps tripping. It isn't a cheap product it should be reliable but hasn't in my case proven to be, replaced with a different product.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from NO BRIGHT LED AS DESCRIBED!!!! This weatherproof socket is not as described on the packaging. It clearly states on the packaging, ''Bright LED power indicator visible through see-through cover'. It DOES NOT HAVE LED's. This is not evident until after fitting as it appears that the LED might be on the top of the switches but these are only painted red and do not light up!!! It is important that any electrical items are as described on the packaging. I will be returning this to purchase one with LED's in order that I can see when the sockets are switched on. This is particularly important at night. I have complained to the manufacturer in the hope that they will either include LED's or repackage.

Spare Parts

Is it posible to purchase spares for this unit. I fitted this about 5 years ago, works great but one of the locking catches has broken and needs to be replaced to maintain the weatherproofing integrity of the unit?
Asked by: DaveMole
Hi DaveMole, BG do not sell individual components as spares, only complete enclosures (with or without a socket installed). However, if you contact us directly (technical.support@bgelectrical.co.uk) after the current travel restrictions and social distancing measures are lifted then we may be able to scrounge one up for you from an unsaleable unit.

Can this be used for electric vehicle charging, using the home charger 3 pin plug?

My socket stays tripped when there are no appliances on it and it will not reset??

Asked by: Stevej8
Hi Stevej8. When resetting the socket, please ensure you are pressing the orange button fully in. Also, please be aware that the indicator is mechanical and not an LED light, so it will not light up when it is reset. If you have any further questions please contact us direct at techincal.support@bgelectrical.co.uk.

When it says output 240w does this mean each socket can only handle electrical items with a maximum of 240w?

Asked by: Geordiela
Hi Geordiela, The listing for a 240W maximum output is incorrect, the sockets which are installed inside this enclosure are actually capable of carrying 13A 3120W (or 26A 6240W if both are active at the same time) as long as the feed cabling is capable of coping with the required power flow.

Can I wire this into a junction box where my security light is wired from?

Currently got a security light wired into a junction box on the wall outside which is powered by a switch inside. Can I wire this into the junction box and then use the indoor switch to turn this on/off?
Asked by: StuartDe
Hi, thank you for your product enquiry. The suitability of your plan will depend on the rating of the cabling feeding into the mentioned switch, and the rating of the switch as well, because these factors will be the limiting points on how much power could be safely drawn through the sockets.

Cable space when using rear entry gland

I want to connect SWA cable into the back of the box using a brass gland. Is there space for the cables behind the socket such that they do not get crushed between the edge of the projected gland inlet and the rear of the socket?
Asked by: GypsyFoot
Hi, thank you for your product enquiry. We are aware of installers using SWA cable with the BG 13A 2G RCD Switched Socket, but the selection of the gland would be key in ensuring that there is minimal or no chance of pinching the internal cores of the cable.

Can this be plugged into a wall socket?

Asked by: Lol1848
Hi, thank you for your product enquiry. This BG 13A 2G RCD Switched Socket is intended for wiring directly to a mains (socket) circuit on the property to allow the maximum power availability, however there is nothing to stop you wiring it to flex with a plug on the end but please be aware that this will reduce the total possible power in the two sockets combined to that of the flex and plug.

What is the biggest size cable that you can fit in and shut the lid to keep it water tight

Am hoping to plug my lay z spa in to this outside but the cable for the lay z spa is bigger than a standard lawnmower cable, will the lid still be able to shut?
Asked by: Chris2392
Hi, thank you for your product enquiry. The design of the moulding around the cable outlets allows for up to a 10mm diameter cable, but obviously the larger the cable the higher the pressure which will be exerted on the seals and thus the clasps, so we would suggest trying to use the smallest possible diameter wherever possible.

I already have an BG Nexus 2G RCD switched socket. Can I connect another unprotected socket to the original socket?

Asked by: teddy2016
Hi, thank you for your product enquiry. As long as the feed cabling to this BG 13A 2G RCD Switched Socket (weatherproof) is rated high enough to cope with the potential additional load from the additional sockets then it will be OK to connect them to the terminals of this socket. Please be aware that this socket will not confer any protection to the additional socket(s) as they will effectively be connected directly to the mains supply not to the protected (socket) side of the internal circuitry.

For the BG 13a RCD socket it states in the specs that the output is 240w, does this mean it will only pass 1 amp and not 13 amp ?

NONE
Asked by: 1Mitch1
Hi, thank you for your product enquiry. This BG 13A 2G RCD Switched Socket (weatherproof) is rated for a constant power flow of 13A or 3,120W through each socket (26A total) assuming that the feed cabling is suitably specified, so no it is not limited to 1A.

Consumer Unit RCD

Hi, I live in a new build property that has RCDs in the consumer unit, do I need this version with RCD for stuff in the garden or do I need one without RCD? I don't know if they will conflict or if this will just trip quicker?
Asked by: dh58977
Hi, thank you for your product enquiry. Consumer Unit RCDs get up to 300mS to trip whereas the socket based RCD in this BG 13A 2G RCD Switched Socket (weatherproof) has to trip within 40mS to pass the relevant standards, so potentially this unit will trip before the consumer unit based on and therefore could prevent it from tripping at all (saving half your circuits from being disconnected unnecessarily).

I've found conflicting views on this - if this is installed off a fused spur, with say 5 metres of cabling on outside wall, does it definitely require Part P certification? Some say it's only if it's a new circuit going back to fuse board.

Asked by: TCal
Hi, thank you for your product enquiry. You will require a Part P registered installer to install and sign-off on the safety of any new cable run, regardless of where it starts from. It is only if the cable is already in place that a socket etc. can be considered to be merely a `replacement' and thus OK for anyone whom is competent to install.

Asked by: TCal
Hi, thank you for your product enquiry. This BG 13A 2G RCD Switched Socket (Storm weatherproof range) can legally be installed on existing cabling (as a replacement) by anyone, but will require a Part P registered installer to install and sign-off on the safety of any new cable run.

outdoor light

i have outdoor 13a RCD socket , but want to connect some outdoor lights , do i need to put a 10amp waterproof socket outside ,or would if be ok just to use a plug with a 3amp fuse thanks Max
Asked by: Maxin
Hi, thank you for your product enquiry. As the fuse in a plug, or a lighting/power circuit, is there to protect the cabling the rating will depend on your cable's maximum rating rather than the power draw of the lights which you will be feeding from it. As for how to connect your lights, a junction box, dedicated socket or plug connected into a socket such as this one would all be equally acceptable methods.

Hi I intend to use this socket outside for a lawnmower and various electric tools , what cable do i use to connect socket thanking you ched 77

Asked by: ched77
Hi, thank you for your product enquiry. This BG 13A 2G RCD Switched Socket (Storm weatherproof range) is intended for permanent installation into the mains rings of a property, and therefore legally requires a Part P registered installer to install and sign-off on the safety of the installation unless it is being used to replace an existing socket in the same location. A Part P registered installer will be entirely capable of selecting the most appropriate cabling for the installation, but if replacing like-for-like then the existing cabling would have to be used else it would be considered a new installation and again would require a Part P registered installer.
