Rated 5 out of 5 by Great Product. Have lived with a water stain on the ceiling for a while. After 5 coats of emulsion i gave up until i saw this. 2 coats of this product and it's completely gone. Absolutely brilliant. Yes it is quite expensive but well worth it. Ceiling now looks like new again. 9 Feb 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by Does exactly what it says! I needed a product to hide a water mark that couldn't be covered with emulsion. Great stuff that lived up to the reviews on the screwfix website. Would highly recommend! Also loved the fact that the store was open till 8pm. It meant that I could pick the paint up after I finished work. Great service as usual! 4 Feb 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by Water stain/ Amazing product! I hadn't read any reviews regarding my requirement for this paint; therefore, I was a little nervous applying it. I have Blown Vinyl on my walls in my living room, before I put my emulsion on, I noticed an area that was peeling. I mixed a little wallpaper paste, pasted it and waited until the day after until dry. The day after came, I put the first coat of emulsion on and left it to dry. To my dismay, the wallpaper paste, I had applied, had not thoroughly dried out and it had soaked through the paper and, emulsion leaving a big, dark water stain! I knew, if I covered it with more emulsion, the stain would just bleed through the paint. I did a little research and based on the reviews of this product, I decided to try it out. I peeled back my wallpaper, thoroughly dried it out, mixed a little more paste, waited 48 hours just to be safe and applied this product. Marvellous, the big stain had disappeared! But, was an oil based primer, going to cover with a water based emulsion! That was the part that made me nervous! After 2 coats of emulsion over the primer and on a wallpaper water stain! Voila! It looked absolutely perfect!!! I cannot see a thing now its completely dry! I now refer to this product as " My new toy ", searching for other areas to paint it on, e.g.. Gloss paint I had painted on wallpaper, a while ago, I had tried everything to block it bleeding through and emulsion wasn't adhering to it, I painted this product on it, followed by the emulsion and, amazingly, the gloss paint had gone!!! 10 stars ********** 3 Feb 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great product Followed previous reviews and wasn't disappointed. Easy to apply and the fact that you can re-coat in a couple of hours helped the task along. Strong odour so make sure you're well ventilated but small price to pay. 23 Jan 2016

When newly plastered, our bathroom ceiling clearly was not primed properly so now there is a large area where the paint has peeled off above the shower to reveal minimal mildew growth. My main priorities are to remove all loose paint, prime and repaint. Will this product be suitable if used on the bare plaster before repainting?

Answer:
Zinsser Cover Stain would be an excellent choice for this type of application as it will seal porous surfaces like bare plaster and has great hiding power to cover any remaining mould stains. All surfaces must be clean, dry and free from any contaminant that may interfere with adhesion. Remove all visible signs of organic growth and treat the areas with an anti-mould solution. Remove all loose existing material by scraping to a sound edge. Feather the sound edges with a fine grade sand paper. Patch prime all stained and bare areas with one coat of Zinsser Cover Stain and allow a minimum of 2 hours drying time before applying the desired top coat finish. As a system in bathroom environments we recommend the application of two full surface area coats of Zinsser Perma-White Interior Satin (product code: 13040 for 1 litre, 62096 for 2.5 litre) allowing 2 hours between coats. Zinsser Perma-White Interior Satin is excellent for high humidity areas and offers up to 7 years protection from future mould and mildew growth.

Answer:
Zinsser Cover Stain Primer can be over coated with most decorative water-based and solvent-based top coats. Where possible, apply Cover Stain Primer to the affected areas and up to a natural break in the surface. This will eliminate any sign of the primed areas "ghosting" through the top coat finish. If priming to a natural surface break is not feasible, achieving a uniform finish over the spot primed area in 1-2 coats will depend on the opacity (hiding power) of the desired top coat. As a system, we recommend over coating Cover Stain Primer with Zinsser Perma-White Interior Matt (1289G for 1 litre, 3939G for 2.5 litre, 9870G for 5 litre) or Satin (130040 for 1 litre, 62096 for 2.5 litre, 7123G for 5 litre) as this product has excellent opacity.

Answer:
Zinsser Cover Stain is not suitable to seal knots in new wood. The only Zinsser primer that can seal knots is Zinsser B-I-N primer. We recommend wiping the knots with methylated spirit before spot priming the knots with Zinsser B-I-N primer. For Interior wood please allow 45 minutes drying time before priming the overall area with one full coat of Zinsser B-I-N primer. For Exterior wood please allow 45 minutes drying time before priming the overall area with one full coat of Zinsser Cover Stain primer. Both Zinsser Cover Stain & Zinsser B-I-N primers provide an excellent basecoat prior to topcoat application. For Interior projects we can suggest Zinsser Perma-White Interior. For Exterior projects we can suggest Zinsser Allcoat Exterior. All Zinsser primers can however, be decorated with most solvent based or water based topcoats.

I am using this to cover grease stains from a oil based cream my son used for his ezcema.
Do I need to paint the whole wall or can I just paint the patches effected?
i.e. when I paint over in the new colour will the patches show through?

Answer:
Our recommendations are to wash the wall to remove the grease and allow the surface to dry thoroughly. It is always best practice, in case your chosen topcoat isn't high hiding enough, to spot prime the stain then prime the whole area up to a natural break to prevent the spot primed patches being visible through the top coat.
