Rated 4 out of 5 by from Protection at good value I had often thought that a Consumer Unit RCD would be adequate until I read in a Q&A : A `portable' Safety RCD plug or adaptor must trip for a 30mA fault level within 40mS, whereas consumer unit Safety RCD devices can have a fault level of 100mA in some cases and have an allowance of up to 300mS to trip in. These could, therefore, be a life saver. The only criticism I have is that the orange indicator light is difficult to see.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolute Necessity I purchased this a year ago when I was putting shelves up in spare bedroom and although it didn't cut out when drilling, I certainly felt much safer by using it. I have recently purchased a second one for my son-in-law who is moving to a new house and plans to do a lot of home improvements. For piece of mind I bought this for him so I know he will be safe when drilling into walls. A great piece of kit as any electrical equipment can be plugged into it and rather be safe than sorry when trimming hedges, drilling etc.

This is described as "non latching". Surely it is mechanically latched, and will therefore stay on when there is no electrical supply; but turn off in the event of an earth-fault, and remain off until reset by the button,

Hi, thank you for your product enquiry.
The Masterplug `portable' Safety RCD Adaptors and Plugs use an electromagnet to keep them in their reset state instead of a mechanical latch, so they will act as if tripped by a fault if power to them stops at any time, this is considered to be safer for instances where the connected equipment has a high likelihood of being fitted with blades or other cutting parts and so could be harmful to health if it reactivated unexpectedly after a power cut.

Hi, thank you for your product enquiry.
Consumer Unit RCDs have a different set of requirements for trip speed, and in some cases have a higher tolerance for fault current.
A `portable' Safety RCD plug or adaptor must trip for a 30mA fault level within 40mS, whereas consumer unit Safety RCD devices can have a fault level of 100mA in some cases and have an allowance of up to 300mS to trip in.

For example, if the microwave went wrong, would this trip before tripping the main house fuse box?

Hi, thank you for your product enquiry.
This is a 30mA fault current RCD which is designed to trip in less than 40mS.
What this means is that if your microwave develops a fault where power is leaking out of the normal circuits and causing a `loss' of 30mA or more then the RCD will trip to prevent this leakage affecting life.
If your main house `fuse' box has RCD protection then it is possible that it may trip as quickly, but if not then this RCD will prevent it tripping.
