Rated 5 out of 5 by Great universal primer I use this on new timber installations, seals knots, primes metal, ~nails, screws,, great for priming mdf. Shellac based so dries hard and can be sanded within an hour or so if needed. Clean or dilute with methilated spirit. 6 Feb 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by Dont buy anything else! As an angry builder who gets fed up of falsely advertised items and such that do not do what they say on the tin....this product put a huge smile on my face. Used on new skirting boards, old skirtings, and furniture. I have used similar products from different companies and all have failed my expectations. I now have a new friend in this tin of paint, it is easy to apply (Very watery mind!), two coats on within an hour and the finish is perfect! Not one knot is visible but still keeps the nice wood features. I cannot praise this product enough! thanks for making things right! Would definately recommend! 16 Nov 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by This stuff will stop a bus! I have been using this product for the past month, using it as a primer and a stain block. As an all round stain block it is very good, and two coats is normally ample enough. There is another review which mentions doubling up on dust sheets, this is good advice as it is extremely thin. If you have a large area and intend on using a roller (quicker), do not roll to quickly otherwise you will get covered in it. It dries quickly and a second coat can be applied after twenty minutes (providing it is not cold), though it does recommend to wait a while longer. If painting over with emulsion, those areas that have been painted with this sealer do stick out like a sore thumb but it does dry ok so do not panic. Just takes a little longer to dry. Limitations, I tried to put this on a water stain on lining paper and noted that, after a while, the stain bled through. I contacted Zinsser, who very helpfully advised me that the moisture in the sealer would liven the moisture in the wallpaper and so would not work. If the surface you are working on is wet, let it dry first. Not so much a negative of this product, just a fact that, as per Zinsser's advice, it does not work on wallpaper stains. 24 Sep 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great Product. Variety of Uses Excellent adhesion to loose or flaky surfaces. Great as a stain blocker, general primer, or as a extremely fast drying undercoat. It dries in 10-20 minutes depending on temp and humidity, because of this do not over brush. Apply generously but once spread, do not drag your brush over the paint as a skin begins to form almost immediately. Bear this in mind for leaving your brush exposed to the air for more than a minute or so. I recently used this directly to a greasy patch on a ceiling rather than sugar soaping and cleaning. It took three coats to completely cover the stains and leave me happy that the emulsion would not split. But because of the crazily fast drying time. This was prepped before I would have even put my marigolds on for sugar soaping. Decant into a paint kettle rather than working out of the can. Sheet up well and double up if you're not polybacked, as this product is thin and liable to spray, splatters and drips. Which you will struggle to remove from carpets etc. Happy decorating. 19 Sep 2015

Answer:
Zinsser B-I-N Primer would be an excellent choice for this type of application as it is an excellent interior wood sealing primer that can be used under most decorative water-based or oil/solvent-based top coats. Zinsser B-I-N Primer will seal Knots, sap streaks and any tannins that bleed through ordinary primers and paints. Please ensure the surfaces to primed are thoroughly cleaned with a hot water/liquid detergent solution, rinsing with warm clean water and allowing to dry before a final wipe over with methylated spirits to remove any remaining contaminants that may interfere with adhesion. Once applied Zinsser B-I-N Primer can be over coated with the desired topcoat after a minimum of 45 minutes drying time.

Thank you for your enquiry. Zinsser B-I-N Shellac Primer is excellent for this type of project as it achieves a really good key to this difficult to paint surface. Our recommendations are to clean the surface down really well, a hot water/liquid detergent solution wash, followed by a rinse with fresh clean warm water ( no detergent) then when dry a final wipe over with methylated spirit, ensuring any surface contamination such as oils, dirt, wax, polish etc are all removed. Apply one coat of the Zinsser B-I-N Primer, with a brush and allow this to dry for a minimum of 45 minutes before applying a topcoat such a Perma-White Interior Satin ( 7123G) or your chosen water based or solvent based decorative topcoat.

I have a whole bungalow to paint that has had door frames and skirting that was previously painted with high gloss paint that is yellowing. I have learnt that acrylic paint stays white and would like the finishing coat to be an acrylic brilliant white satin one but not sure if acrylic will mix with this primer. Help please

Answer:
Zinsser B-I-N Primer would be an excellent choice for this type of application as it provides superior adhesion to glossy surfaces without the need for prior sanding and is compatible with most decorative water-based or oil/solvent-based topcoats. Please ensure the surfaces are thoroughly cleaned down with a detergent solution and warm water, then rinsed with clean warm water. Allow to dry before wiping over the surfaces with methylated spirits to ensure any remaining residues that may interfere with adhesion are removed. Zinsser B-I-N Primer can then be applied in one coat allowing 45 minutes drying time before the application of the desired topcoat. As a system we can suggest our water-based Zinsser Perma-White Interior Satin (13040 for 1 litre, 62096 for 2.5 litre, 7123G for 5 litre)

Having pulled some wallpaper off the chimney breast in a bedroom for redecoration, I noted a really bad smelling patch of plaster. It's a musty fusty old person smell, but its not damp. I tried cleaning with bleach solution and other stuff to no effect, it seems really deeply embedded in the plaster finish.
Is this product likely to sort out my problem?

Answer:
Zinsser B-I-N Primer Sealer will permanently block every kind of unpleasant odour, from smoke and fire damage to odours from pets and nicotine and including musty odours. No other primer can duplicate the odour sealing properties of shellac based Zinsser B-I-N. Please ensure surfaces are clean, dry, sound and free of dust, dirt, excessive chalky material, grime, grease, mildew, wallpaper adhesive or any contamination that may interfere with adhesion. In most cases only one coat is necessary and it can be recoated with the desired top coat after 45 minutes with Zinsser Perma-White Interior Matt (1289G for 1 litre, 3939G for 2.5 litre, 9870G for 5 litre) or Satin (130040 for 1 litre, 62096 for 2.5 litre, 7123G for 5 litre) or most decorative topcoats.

I'm fed up of painting (dried) caulk with emulsion and it then cracking/crazying within a few days. I've tried lots of different caulks and lots of different emulsions.

Is this suitable for priming the caulk once dry before painting with emulsion paint?

thanks

Answer:
Zinsser B-I-N Primer is suitable for application to decorators caulk but we would advise Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 Primer (10135 for 1 litre, 10136 for 2.5 litre, 4224G for 5 litre) as our first choice recommendation in this instance. Bulls Eye 1-2-3 is very flexible with excellent elasticity so would be our go to product for this type of issue. Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 Primer can be top coated after a minimum of 1 hour with Zinsser Perma-White Interior Matt (1289G for 1 litre, 3939G for 2.5 litre, 9870G for 5 litre) or Satin (130040 for 1 litre, 62096 for 2.5 litre, 7123G for 5 litre) or most decorative water-based / oil-based topcoats.
