Rated 1 out of 5 by from Runs & DrIes Quickly Puzzled by all the good reviews on here. Had painted one varnished fire surround with oil based paint with reasonable results for DIYer, then bought this for other fire surround. Very runny and dries quickly which doesn't give time to brush out any drips. Had to sand down this paint prior to applying final coat which is what I wanted to avoid in first place. Also very difficult to remove any spills and ended up throwing out brush.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Dire down the Line... Used with Zinsser Self-Priming Paint White for a domestic bathroom. Started off with bear plaster, which had had more than ample time to dry. Looked lovely going on, but 8 months down it's started cracking and peeling all over the place. Possibly the combination, but the whole surface is very, very brittle. I'm now going to have to strip the whole lot down manually and start again less than a year later - what a waste of time and money! Lot no: 164028

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great stuff - does the job I've been using this product for years - glad that Screwfix now sells it. Excellent stain blocking - seals smoke, water, tar, graffiti, rust normally with just 1 coat. Dries quickly, so no waiting for the next day to do top coats. Also great at priming glossy surfaces - things like old glossy ceramic tiles are no problem - 1 coat B-I-N and then apply any top coat. Only problem is cleaning the brushes - you can use meths (white spirit doesn't work) or just use a cheap(ish) brush and throw it away afterwards

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sealed After we moved into this house and I was doing some much-overdue decorating I found bleeding through wall paint round a window where something weird had happened (historically) to the underlying plaster and the surface was all bubbled. Most odd. Other products were ineffective, but I found this BIN at Screwfix and invested. Brilliant! It's more than a year on and there's no sign of any recurrence of the problem. Then a friend mentioned a stain on his ceiling, which kept coming through and a decorator had not been able to seal. He was desperate. One application of BIN and there's no sign of it weeks later. Brownie points galore. I can't praise it enough!

Which product for multi uses

Would this suit both jobs? Paint over patches that have been fixed with Easi fill to stop flashing before adding coats of emulsion and as a basecoat/primer before painting a wooden varnished chest of drawers.
Asked by: BCHCornwall
Hi BCHCornwall. Thank you for your enquiry. A perfect choice for multi jobs! There will always be a chance that spot priming will result in the primer flashing through as this is dependent on the covering power of your chosen topcoat. For best results to achieve a uniformly sealed surface ready for painting our recommendations are to spot prime the repaired/filled areas with B-I-N and allow to dry for a minimum of 1 hour prior to applying a full coat of B-I-N to the whole area up to a natural break (i.e. corners, alcoves etc.). Again, you couldn't have picked a better primer for varnished surfaces as it has unparalleled adhesion to any surface providing great key without having to scuff sand. 1 or 2 coats of B-I-N is recommended, to be applied by brush or roller at a coverage rate of approx. 10m²/L/coat. Always ensure that the surface has prepared sufficiently i.e., with hot soapy water then rinsed with fresh warm water to remove detergent and when dry a good wipe with methylated spirit. Once B-I-N has dried (minimum of 45 minutes) you can overcoat it with your chosen decorative topcoat, oil based or water based. Zinsser Perma-White Interior (1289G = 1L white matt or 13040 = 1L white satin) would be a suitable finishing coat. 2 coats are recommended to providing a durable, cleanable, long lasting decorative finish that stays white, does not yellow and can be over coated after a minimum of 2 hours.

After this primer, should I use water- or oil-based topcoat (eggshell)?

I will be painting over dark woodstain/varnish on doors and furniture Thanks!
Asked by: GemmaP
Hi. Thank you for your enquiry. Once you have applied the B-I-N and it has been allowed to dry (minimum of 45 minutes) you can over coat it with any oil or water based paint. I hope this helps.

Can this be used to seal untreated MDF kitchen doors?

Asked by: tescoman
Hi. thank you for your recent enquiry. B-I-N is perfect for this particular project, it is our ultimate primer. 1 or 2 coats are recommended, to be applied by brush or roller at a coverage rate of approx. 10m²/L/coat. Always ensure that the surface has prepared sufficiently i.e., with hot soapy water, rinse with fresh warm water to remove detergent and when dry a good wipe with methylated spirit. Once this has dried (minimum of 45 minutes) you can overcoat it with your chosen decorative topcoat, oil based or water based. I hope this fully answers your question.

Priming OSB

Will this product be sufficient to prime OSB in preparation for painting a top coat?
Asked by: DCurrie
Hi, thanks for your enquiry. Yes, for interior use B-I-N would be the best primer sealer, It's shellac base provides unparalleled adhesion and sealing properties. It can be applied with either a brush or roller at a coverage rate of 10m2/L. Once dried (minimum of 45mins) it can be covered with your chosen decorative finish, oil or water based. For exterior use it would be best to run with the Cover Stain (17117), same application but requires 2 hours minimum between coats. With any exterior painting we would always advise you ensure conditions during application and cure are favourable, temperatures above 5⁰C for solvent based products and relative humidity is less than 80%. Ensure that there is no risk or rain, fog, frost or condensation from affecting the applied paint before it has had a chance to fully cure. Hope this helps.

what is the best way to clean brushes after using B.I.N Shellac based Primer Sealer?

Asked by: lubi
Hi, thank you for your recent enquiry. Methylated spirit is a suitable solvent for removing B-I-N from paint brushes. Alternatively, disposal (of the brush/roller sleeve) is also a good method providing the cost of the brush doesn't outweigh the cost of the meths. Hope this helps.
