Rated 5 out of 5 by Very good primer We have found this to be a very good primer. it goes on well and resists rust even when not overcoated for a while. We certainly recommend it. 23 Oct 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Does what it says on the tin. Like it says on the tin, it's a no nonsense primer. Used it to undercoat the chasis of my kit car. Great coverage and not too odourous. Spot on!. 17 Oct 2015
Rated 2 out of 5 by Strange behaviour Well, this is the strangest red oxide primer I have ever used. The datasheets suggested that it should share the same properties as the oxide primers I have used many times before so, as it was available locally, I gave it a try. It was great to brush on and gave good coverage. I painted almost half of a Land Rover chassis with it. I thought the gloss finish was rather unusual for a primer but I went ahead and tried to apply a top coat. The black chassis paint I used first immediately wrinkled and just came off. I tried a different brand of black chassis paint which went on OK but, once dry, seemed not to have adhered to the primer. It can easily be scraped off with a fingernail. I went on to try several other top coats I had lying around, including various coach paints and random tins of touch-up paint. I can't seem to get anything to stick to it. I really can't imagine what I've been doing wrong. I can only conclude that there was either something wrong with the formulation in the particular tin I bought, or this paint is far too unpredictable to be used with normal top coats. Very very odd. 17 Jul 2015
Rated 3 out of 5 by Not matt finish expected I have used many brands of red oxide primer in the past mainly in the automotive space. Here I have been very used to red oxides drying to a matt finish which you can then either sand or apply a topcoat straight on to (depending on application). Made some steel table legs at the weekend and used this to find that it has dried to a semi-gloss finish - explains why a few people commenting here have said that they will keep it as a top coat, but it is likely that I will need to rub this down to use as a proper primer. First can of red oxide that I've ever seen to do this - bit disappointed really but I'm sure it will do it's job underneath my topcoat. 29 Jun 2015

Is this a cellulose or water based? Or something more complicated like the direct to rust paints?
