I owned this drill for about 12 months before the gear box jammed. It was always difficult to engage the drill / hammer on/off, wish I'd returned it straight away in hind sight.
Now it will only work in hammer mode, I still use it for hacking off tiles but it's no good as a drill anymore.
Poor quality for a Makita

Needed a new 240 sds a bit quick.
It is light and simple to use and seems to be well built and has ample power.

Standard Makita quality, powerful for its price and size, gets lots of use taking out a chimney, takes the abuse thrown at it.

bought this drill as an emergency replacement
for the same model on which the clutch has failed after one year and ten days.Cannot really comment on the new machine yet, but the old one during its limited life performed excellently-
carrying out drilling & light chiseling duties with consumate ease. Have recently had a clutch failure on another very similar Makita drill, also just outside Screwfix warranty, I'm wondering whether Makita have a problem. I will contact them to see what they have to say. I have some Makita power tools which are 35 years old and still going strong! While I don't expect drills of this type to last forever, I feel that there should be more than twelve months life in them.
