Rated 5 out of 5 by from Top Quality Drill Brought this whilst on offer to add to my collection of Mikita cordless devices. As always very impressed with the product. The 4.0Ah battery is a must for heavy user.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Makita drill 4amp battery Bought drill whilst it was on offer so make it's good value otherwise the screwfix price is abit high but handy to collect if you want it straight away. Had a few drills over the years starting with dewalt but found makita take more of a beating so have bought this having the larger battery.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from total letdown Bought one in august to replace my old DeWalt NiCad 18v,straight out of the box it looked cheap and nasty, not the normal Makita colour, but hey ho colours do change.I noticed straight away that it didn't have the same grunt as the DeWalt, that drill would snatch it it jammed, the Makita just stalled, and the DeWalt was a cheap one. I've had Makita all my working life (over 30 years) and it's always been good, the other day at work I noticed that a hole drilled with a small bit was oval! I tried several small bits and each hole was oval,I discovered that the chuck had a bad wobble,it was running out by about 4mm.Returned to Screwfix and upgraded to a dearer model,I have recently bought a lot of new Makita 18v tools and hope this is a one off.I don't abuse tools and have some that are over 20 years old so it was nothing I did to the machine, don't buy this model.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Brilliant at the price I purchased this drill whilst on offer price. I was pleasantly surprised that the excellent 4ah battery has a charge indicator. The box is good also, in that it is quite sturdy and is able to accommodate some other bits and pieces. The drill itself feels very powerful and smooth. The 4ah battery is quite weighty on the drill but this is still nonetheless a compact drill. It is able to drill into brick and is a very powerful screwdriver. The LED is very bright, which is good, but maybe slightly better if positioned above the battery. Although not a deal breaker, would have been better if it had come with a bit holder (which can be purchased separately). Even at full price i would say that this drill is worth serious consideration as it is well built, powerful and also controllable for slower speed applications. Three year warranty with Makita by registering online, and not being a sealed cased motor, has changeable brushes if ever required. Another positive is the wide range of 18v tools compatible with the battery, such as a torch and vacuum.

It is described as a drill, and Makita also sell combi kits of this with a separate driver, but some reviews indicate that this is also used as a screw driver, can anyone clarify and indicate if there is a need to in addition of this buy a driver?

Answer:
LXT refers to the battery technology (Lithium eXtreme Technology). Makita do offer a large range of Brushless LXT products. This model DHP456SM1J has a 4-pole, brushed motor which gives efficient power transfer from battery to gearbox whilst allowing for reduced motor size.

Answer:
Hello Adeblade,
We have a range of batteries suitable for this Makita 18V LXT Combi Drill. Our range can be found here > http://www.screwfix.com/c/tools/bat...
You can put any Ah battery on this drill as long as the connection is the same. The Ah acts like a fuel tank, so the more Ah capacity the battery has the longer the battery should last before it needs charging.
