Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great stain cover Great product, does exactly what it's meant to, covered some damp/mould stains on a ceiling and so far no sign of the stain coming through. It is quite strong smelling when applying, but smell soon goes. Would definitely use this again

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Primer I have used this as a stain block and a belt and braces primer. The coverage and adhesion are excellent. It can seem a little thin if you overload your brush, but it gives a superb base for the topcoat. I have used this in hot weather, you can't hang around, but conversely the finished paintwork has stood up to full sun and high summer temperatures. Obviously not the UK! Recommended without reservation.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from All you need! I started using Zinsser products a few years back when paint manufacturers changed the formulation of their oil based paints to conform to new EU regulations. For my money this cover stain variant is the pick of the range. I use it for everything where I need a primer not just a stain block. It's a handy backup when water based primer undercoat just doesn't cut it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Obliterate from view Stripped off the lining paper to reveal a whole wall of heavy drawings in blue biro. I thought I would try normal undercoat which just highlighted the problem, I have used other stain blockers before but not Zinesser so was delighted with the result it covered the scribbles in one coat and dried very quickly, it may not be the cheapest but is worth any extra cost.

will this cover atains on painted exterior stonework? im getting uellow patches in my masonry paint.

Asked by: Aidan77
Hello, thank you for your enquiry. Zinsser Cover Stain is recommended for exterior use on surfaces such as previously painted masonry and is excellent for blocking stains such as rust, mould or water stains. For best results we recommend that the surface to be painted is suitably prepared, ensure it is clean, dry and free for any contamination such as mould , mildew, dirt, oils, grease, detergent, loose or flaking paint etc by cleaning thoroughly, treating with a mould killer ( if mould is present) , scraping any loose paint back to a firm feathered edge. Apply the Cover Stain to the whole area with a brush or roller, aiming for a coverage rate of 10m2/L/coat and allow to dry for a minimum of 2 hours before applying your chosen decorative finish. If the stain on the masonry is a tar or bitumen based stain then the Bulls Eye 123 Primer (10135) would be the recommended primer instead of Cover Stain, following the same preparation as for the Cover Stain, We trust this helps answer your question. Kind regards Zinsser

Painting new shed

I have been advised to to use this primer on a new shed that has a solvent coating to prevent moisture attack etc. How long do I have to wait before doing so? I would really like to have the shed primed and painted before Winter.
Asked by: Mike0001
Hi. Thank you for your enquiry. Our recommended primer/sealer for exterior wood is the Zinsser Cover Stain (1 litre = 17114 or 2.5 litres = 17117). If the timber is tantalised you will need to ensure the treatment is completely dry before you apply the Cover stain, the same goes if the wood is wet. On this occasion you might want to check with the manufacturer of the shed to be on the safe side and ask about the solvent coating they applied and how long you should leave it as the Cover Stain can be applied once completely dry. Hope this helps.

Emulsion primer?

Can you paint emulsion over this or just oil based paint?
Asked by: Paintfly
Hi. Thank you for your enquiry. The Cover Stain can be coated with any oil or water based decorative finish once it has completely dried (minimum of 2 hours). I hope this helps.

Can this be used on plastic?

We're looking to paint the plastic interior of an old boat and wondered whether this would provide a good base coat.
Asked by: HWSR
Hi, thank you for your enquiry. Our best recommendation for a primer for plastic prior to painting is the Zinsser Bulls Eye 123 Primer ( Product 10135) . For best results we recommend ensuring the surface to be painted is clean, dry and free from any surface contaminants such as dirt, oils, mould & mildew etc, lightly abrade the plastic surface and wipe with methylated spirit prior applying the Bulls Eye 123 by brush, roller or spray. The Bulls Eye 123 can be over coated after a minimum of 1 hour in good drying condition with a product such as Zinsser Perma-White Interior Satin (13040), which provides a non yellowing, durable, cleanable decorative finish that is resistant to mould growth, alternatively most conventional decorative finishes can be applied over the Bulls Eye 123 Primer. We trust this answers your question

Cab it block out nicotine?

Can this product cover heavy nicotine stained ceilings?
Asked by: Righton
Hi. Thank you for your enquiry. Our best recommendation for sealing nicotine stains (and odour) is the Zinsser B-I-N (1 litre = 29661, 2.5 litre = 10130 or 5 litres = 3298G). We advise 1 or 2 coats to be applied by brush or roller at a coverage rate of approx. 10m²/L/coat. Always ensure that the surface has prepared sufficiently i.e., with hot soapy water then rinsed with fresh warm water to remove detergent and when dry a good wipe with methylated spirit. Hope this helps.
