Rated 4 out of 5 by from Really does the job! Started using a hand rake on my front lawn, 30 mins to do a 6ft wide strip. Bought one of these (easy - thanks Screwfix!). Did both lawns today in about 2 hours (two passes each lawn). The rubbish collection isn't the best, but it works - just keep a bad close by and empty the machine frequently. Lawns look better already, and I've only u7sed the rake function so far (the scarifier looks a bit aggresive!) Easy to use, easy to assemble, not too noisy.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Does the job I don't often bother to write reviews but after umming and ahing over this product for ages and almost being put off by the negative reviews I thought I'd throw in my two pennies worth. The scarifier certainly 'does the job' as demonstrated by the three dumpy bags full of thatch and moss currently sitting on my driveway. I have a fairly large lawn, about 80m2 but was still amazed by how much came off, could probably have got more but after 6 hours I was dead! It's fair to say the lawn was in a pretty horrible state, we've only been in the house for one summer and I don't think the previous occupants gave it much TLC. Last year I just cut it and kept it at bay but it's now more moss than it is grass and looking very sorry for itself so I decided I needed to take action. A friend told me a scarifier was the way to go and after seeing I could buy this for not much more than a days hire and seeing it had mostly positive reviews I was sold. Build Quality - I cannot comment on its long term quality having had it a day but as you'd expect for the price it does feel a bit flimsy. That said I've certainly put it through its paces today and it has stood up to the battering! The fact it is mostly plastic does have the advantage of meaning it is very lightweight and easy to maneuver. It was a bit of a fiddle lining up one of the screws but took no more than 5 minutes to put together. Operation - As I said above this does get the job done however if you are looking for a magic wand or an easy life this is not for you as it takes a lot of patience to get a good result. Again as mentioned my lawn was horrendous so if yours is already well kept you may not have these issues but for me it went something like this... 1. Set machine running, walk half a metre, it cuts out. 2. Look underneath to find huge clump of thatch clogging up the works, wrapped around everything. 3. Clear blockage, unwrap tangled grass from blades 4. repeat steps 1-3 several times 5. Take off collection basket to see if this improves things, repeat 1-3 again 6.Prop open back with bungee cords and continue, (machine now works great but you get covered, and I mean covered in all the debris)! 7. Use petrol lawn mower to 'hover' up all the thatch and moss I went back over with the scarifier twice, followed by the lawn mower to collect everything. I then raked by hand to get the last little bits. In all this took me about 6 hours. So while it gets the result in the end it was quite a laborious operation! I would also question if it is particularly safe to prop the back open as I did, a couple of times I must have hit a stone as something flew out and whacked me in the shin. So overall I would say for the price I think this product is worth a punt as along as you are prepared to put the effort in yourself. It has done what I set out to do, i.e. cleared a heck of a lot of trash from the lawn, but it was by no means light work!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent power tool Easy to assemble. It Removed a huge amount of thatch and moss.In fact i filled up a one ton bag plus a garden refuse bin !. Used both the scarifier and aerator and looking forward to seeing the results over the next few weeks. The only negative is the collection bin which is too small and it had to be emptied fat too frequently but as other reviews have stated, take it off and then when finished the scarifying etc.. run a lawnmower over the lawn to collect the off take. Conclusion - A fantastic tool and well worth the money.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely Brilliant!!! Yes, I think this is an absolutely brilliant machine for the price. I broke my brothers Black and Decker machine which was a toy compared to this, so he agreed to go halves with me on this machine. I have just finished both scarifying and raking my lawn. This gadget is a real gem; I set it on the middle setting for both scarifying and raking and it worked a treat. It produced 10 big bags full of moss and old grass. It has a great hum and sounds like a combine harvester when it strikes up. It is really powerful and well master of the job. The changing of the roller cutters between scarifying and raking is easy. I thoroughly recommend this machine - don't wait if you want one, go get it.

I have looked at other scarifiers and they tend to come with 2 blades: one is a series of wires to extract the dead grass and the second is a series of blades to cut aeration slots in the turf. Does this item come with the interchangeable blades?

Asked by: Tezzaboy
Hello Tezzaboy, The product has two functions, scarifying or raking. The scarifying cylinder is preassembled on the product. The raking cylinder is included in the supply box. These can be changed depending on the application. Thank you for using Q&A.

I've a large decking and tarmac parking area prone moss build up. This machine would be invaluable if only it was available with a stiff brush cartridge the same as the rake and blade cartridge. Why hasn't anyone thought of this yet?

Can this be used to aerate the lawn? If so, how long are/deep do the aeration blades/needles penetrate?

Changing scarafier/raker

I have just swapped to my raker. But on inspection it seems that it is not parallel (to the ground) It seems on the 'skew'. I have refitted it but it is still the same. Anyone else had this problem or is the normal?
Asked by: lento
Hello Lento, The instruction manual reads: 1). Remove the grass catcher . 2). Place the product upside down on a flat stable ground to have access to the underbody. 3). Loosen the two bolts (22a) with a suitable wrench, remove them together with the spring washers (22b) and the presently attached cutting device (21 or 23). (See Fig. 12a). 4). To remove the cutting device, first lift the bearing and then pull it out from the drive shaft (25). 5). Align and insert the respective cutting device: Slide the hex nut into the socket of driving shaft (25) and fix the bearing to the support with the bolts (22a) and spring washers (22b). (See Fig. 12b). If the instructions have been followed correctly then the attachments should be aligned correcly. If this is not the case then there may be a fault with the product. If this is the case, the product is within warranty and the order/invoice number can be provided, then we would be able to offer an exchange. This can be done via our customer services team on 03330 112 112 or by heading into your local Screwfix Trade counter. (The product would need to be cleaned 'within reason') Thank you for using Q&A. (LM).

Can this be used for aeration? And do you know the part number for this if possible

Asked by: Mrgaza
The scarifier function cuts lines into the soil which aerates the soil.
