Rated 1 out of 5 by Save your money The good bit – it was easy to install. The bad bit – it doesn’t work! I live in a relatively hard water area and I need to de-scale our kettle about once a month. Scale on tap spouts and shower heads also builds up at a measurable rate. After fitting this device I have noticed no appreciable difference in lime scale build-up, measured over a period of three months. I then removed the device and tested for another three months. Absolutely no difference! I’m at a loss to understand why this product has such good reviews. It seems to me that I have a shiny but empty tube - a complete waste of money! 2 Mar 2016
Rated 4 out of 5 by Water conditioner I have fitted these for the past ten years. I tried the wire-type but they do not work, I tried the additive methods but they get blocked up so I use these. It should be noted that they are not designed or intended to reduce the limescale, rather they change the way lime builds up. Instead of forming hard crusts of lime, which need to be scrapped off or attacked with acid, they leave the lime much softer so it can be removed during normal cleaning. If you do not clean your shower then you will not notice any difference but if you do then you will find the limescale wipes away easily. They will not stop scale build-up in kettles, they are not supposed to. I have one in my Parent's house, one in my Brother's and one in my own. Nuff said. 7 Jul 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Will last forever Slightly more expensive than the competition but you get a superior product. Was easy to install no moving parts or additional costs great long term investment. 18 Mar 2015
Rated 1 out of 5 by No difference here as well! £40 down the drain. I descaled my kettle to see how quickly scale would be back. It was back 3-4 water boiling later. Have now thick layer of scale in my kettle, needs descaling again. For the record - water hardness in my area between 7.5-8.0 pH. This "device" was a waste of money. 28 Nov 2014

Answer:
Seems I got the guarantee period wrong for this product.
It's two years not the five years I've seen quoted elsewhere.
I thought the Salamander website quoted even longer. It all depends on the water quality in your area. I would agree change the unit every two years especially if you live in a high scale area.

Answer:
I've used this product over four years now and just had my heat Exchanger replaced in my Worcester Combi 30Si under the guarantee for the boiler. The boiler engineer suggested that this SESI Salamader had failed after four years. The Combi heat exchanger was getting clogged up with scale. We do live in a high scale area in Gloucestershire.
I would therefore suggest you replace this product every four years if you live in a high scale region. If not then who knows. The first sign of a problem with a scale inhibitor is when your hot water taps deliver reduced pressure flow. This should be noticeable. The radiators should be working normally. The hot water taps will not.
What is happening is that your heat exchanger in the boiler is gradually getting clogged up with scale. It will soon have to be replaced. You better hope your boiler is still under guarantee. If not then you will have to pay for a new heat exchanger and the cost of fitting. A very tidy sum that will be.
