It the catch self locking?

Does this catch ride up the slotted part of the catch and self lock in place? It the sloping angle, a long and low angle to self lock, or do you have to twist the ring when closing the gate and lock in place.?

Access from both sides?

Would i be correct in thinking the latch can be operated from both sides of the gate?
