Good item but beware!
We bought this item through Screwfix who had a very good price. Item delivered on time so all great up to then. There was some damp on the wood sit had been stored outside and a little warping of the seat but nothing too bad. Finish is untreated save for preservative so we opted to to give it two coats of Sandolin redwood stain before assembling. This is definitely a 2 man job and a degree in engineering is helpful.
There are some mistakes in instructions eg. the positioning of the chain supports is described as 40 mm from the end panel -WRONG - just inside of the slope on the main beam. It suggests putting on the metal feet first. Don't, leave that till last then you can pack up inside the feet and wet the swing level, how many patios are dead flat, most slope to allow for water run off (or should) Attach the feet last. The brackets attaching the two roof sections are 90 deg but should be nearer 110 deg. Flatten them with a big hammer to fit. Also, don't assemble the roof and then put it on, much easier to lay it on then tweek it till it fits correctly then screw together. Once the top rail and sides were together, we also put a 30 mm by 20 mm brace across the back to hold the construction square - helped a lot.
In addition to the recommended tools needed you also need a set square a tape measure, a spirit level, a rubber headed mallet and quite a lot of patience and careful planning. A fairly good level of DIY skill is needed to assemble but it does look good and is good value for the price, especially compared to similar items in DIY outlets which are rubbish in comparison.
Took about 3 hours to assemble but looks good.

Great Arbour Swing Seat
We first thought about the Rowlinson Dartmouth Arbour Swing Seat last summer but delayed ordering until Spring. Best price from ScrewFix. Excellent service and delivery. Easy to assemble but took us rather longer than 2 hours. Wanted to be sure we had everything correct. Husband has made some planters for each side and clematis and other flowers already planted. Very relaxing to gently swing while enjoying a cuppa or glass of wine! Looking forward to the warmer weather. Would definitely recommend the seat and ScrewFix.

Fixing the arbour.
Is it absolutely necessary for this arbour to be screwed down onto a concrete base? How secure is it if left freestanding? If it does need to be secured, as it is to be placed on grass, can metal post spikes be used instead?
Asked by: Barney17
This swing seat is a sturdy structure even if not secured down, however we do recommend it is. The metal footplates each have four holes in so if put on grass it would be very easy to drive metal spikes through the holes and into the ground.

I have just ordered a dartmouth swing seat and need to prepare a base. What are the minimum dimensions for this and do the feet have to be bolted to the base?
Asked by: Eblackadder
Hi, the footprint of the Dartmouth is Width: 1730mm x Depth: 985mm. ideally the base should be made slightly larger than the footprint. It is recommend that the Dartmouth feet are bolted or screws down.

What are the dimensions of the base between the uprights, i.e. what is the ground footprint taken up when fitting?

What treatments, if any, would you recommend for protecting from weather and what type of soft wood is used?
Asked by: dpf001
Hi, This product is pressure treated with a preservative which means no further treatment is necessary but it can be painted or stained if you wish to. The type of timber is Spruce/fir. Kind Regards.
