Rated 4 out of 5 by from Actually, really quite good The best part of 300 other reviewers surely aren't wrong: this maul, axe and grenade set is remarkable value and, one hopes, notwithstanding the white heat of bought-it-yesterday-used-it-today! enthusiasm, not a set of axe-shaped objects made of cheese. Arriving in a box longer than you might expect, the star of the show is the 6lb maul: long of handle, not too heavy, not too light, and with just enough of an edge on the wedge to make short work of anything up to, in my case anyway, a ten inch diameter log. The fibreglass shaft controls impacts well and its ovalised section helps you keep your aim as you power through your dead blow, scattering wood to the far reaches of your garden. Loses one mark for those of us whose aim is somewhat wayward: the rubber protection just inboard of the head needs to be thicker and tougher. The grenade, like, the maul, is an essential of log splittery. Far better than its chisel shaped counterpart, the Roughneck Twister, with its point it drives itself deep into the grain. Bash it in with your wooden mallet first and then give it the beans with the blunt end of your maul or your sledgehammer. Did Roughneck make a hatchet job of the hatchet? Mostly not. It sailed through old scaffolding boards and fibrous bark. Time will tell for how well it holds its edge but it's nothing that a flap disc or bench grinder won't fix. The handle is however a fraction short for my liking; the belly and throat are well contoured but the knob is a little too sharp for comfort.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Absolutely terrible About 2 seconds after I opened the box I noticed that the axe blade on the maul was curved off to the left instead of being straight. All I had to do was to look down the handle at the blade. Then I noticed that neither the maul blade or the hatchet were sharp and I mean they were FLAT like they had not gone through ANY sharpening process at all. Took it back to the shop, as always they were really helpful and brought me 2 more from stock which we opened to find that the same problems were recurrent in all 3 sets. Gave up, got a refund and bought something else. I have just had to do the same thing today with a set of Magnusson Chisels!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great purchase Great value for a set like this - you really need all three parts if you’re trying to break up logs or stumps. I had fun getting rid an old oak stump and breaking it up.

Small axe and maul are both blunt

Used this set for the first time to find both are blunt and unable to cut wood. Are they supposed to be supplied like this or is this a fault? Please respond to this question or I will have little choice but to return for a refund.

The splitting maul seems to be blunt

Is the Maul supposed to have a rounded edge to the blade ? Is the customer expected to sharpen the maul ? It literally just bounces off everything, no matter how hard and accurately it is swung.Would grinding an edge to it ruin the steel ?

The 6lb maul that can be purchased separately has a ‘screw though handle attachment’. Is the maul head in this set attached the same way? Are there any other differences between the two?

Asked by: Woodsplinters

Is the splitting maul meant to be blunt? Or should it be ready and therefore pre-sharpened? In its current state it just bounces off logs

Asked by: LukeF

Can this equipment be used to split open a tree stump?
