Rated 3 out of 5 by from Difficult to start Bought this because of the Mountfield reputation. Unfortunately this hasn't lived up to it. It started OK on the very first start up after unpacking etc. The next day, when I wanted to use it, it took a couple of minutes to get started. From then on, using the method described in the manual, I spent more time trying to start it, than I did using it. When it did run, it cut very well, as you would expect from a new blade, but put it under a little bit of load and it slows right down. Very disappointed.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from You get what you pay for. I used to work in and was college-trained in forestry and have quite a bit of experience of chainsaw use. My old trusted ***** finally gave up the ghost last week, but because I only cut up a bit of firewood for the log burner nowadays I didn't want to spend too much on a new saw (the equivalent of my old ***** would now be between £500 & £600), so, after checking out the reviews, decided on the Mountfield. Having been only used to professional grade saws during my work, the first thing that struck me on unpacking was how flimsy the saw seemed, but I only need to cut up a few logs occasionally. Moreover, the bar and chain are of good quality, there is a handy set of felling dogs for levering the saw into the cut and the anti kick-back brake worked. After I'd fuelled and oiled up, the saw started easily and revved up nicely. I got through the first log (about 30 cm in diameter) quickly and all seemed well apart from a bit of a splutter half way through which I put down to it being brand new. However, after that first log the engine failed to pick up revs and finally cut out and would not restart. Having had considerable training and experience of chainsaw maintenance, my first port of call was the spark plug, but on removing the spark plug cover, the lead detached from the plastic cap and there was no visible means of reattaching it. Needless to say, I returned the saw to Screwfix promptly who, fair play, gave me a no quibbles refund. I then went along to the nearest ***** stockist and purchased a model which cost close to the £400 mark, but at least I have the piece of mind that it is never likely to let me down and I can use it to reliably carry out odd jobs for friends and neighbours. I am sure the particular Mountfield saw that I purchased happened to be a dud and not everyone's experience is the same as mine, but I am now a firm believer that when it comes to something like a chainsaw, you get what you pay for. As the saw failed to cut more than one log, I am unable to say whether it is suitable for light garden use. With my 15 to 20 minutes of sawing and failed maintenance, my gut feeling is that it is certainly not up to felling a tree. If you're going to buy this, my advice is to restrict yourself to cross cutting logs with the saw in the vertical position. If you want something to fell trees, where you require the saw in a horizontal position for any period of time, you are going to have spend more.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Does the job! Comes with a very useful case. If you follow the starting instructions it starts every time. It's not as robust as a Stihl and it's slightly under-powered but it does the job. My only niggle is the On/Off switch is very easy to knock, which did switch the saw off a couple of times. Good value for money.
