Rated 3 out of 5 by from DIY quality at best Disappointed with this set considering the price and being from a known manufacturer. The vacuum attachment is passable but as the air is extracted through the center drilling you can't use a pilot drill in vacuum mode or even a guide to follow a pre drilled pilot hole. Your best bet is to get the core drill biting into the material by about a cm with a pilot drill then remove the pilot to do the rest by which time you have already made plenty of dust so kind of defeats the object, another technique is to make a guide from a piece of plywood and screw that to the wall first but that means at least 2 small holes in the wall for every big hole. Please do not try to start a core drill without a pilot or guide especially the larger sizes! It will throw you off a ladder or at best give you lovely swirl patterned gouges all over your wall when it slips. Another issue is that it can be very difficult to get the brick core out of the solid sided core drill; removing the core drill from the Arbor and bashing it out from through the threaded hole wastes time especially if it breaks several times per hole. Back to the pilot drill issue, I don't know why they don't give you a pilot to start the hole especially as they DO give you a drift to get the pilot out??? The case is very flimsy but this doesn't really matter as the the biggest issue with this set is the quality of the core drills themselves, they are so thin and light that the diamond segments wear down incredibly quickly. I cut one 52mm hole through a concrete wall 200mm thick and the core drill is over half worn out already!! I have been using a cheap but solid set I got from fleabag over a year ago, under a ton for 5 cores up to 154mm diameter and those cores have cut around 30 holes each and still have more segment left than this drill after one use. I assume that marcrist have used a soft filler metal on the segments to allow the ridiculously thin segments (approx 3mm) to stand up to the percussion better but my old faithful set with decent thickness segments can be pushed through using the hammer action without issues just as quickly. I'm going to try to take them back but there is no warranty on how fast a drill wears out so I doubt I will get anywhere. For those of you that have the time to mess around making and fixing a guide to the wall for your extractor fan and want to minimise the dust it will probably work fine but to any tradesmen who want a core drill that will last and save time then look elsewhere.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Professional use I bought these as they were percussion core bits. Using these on percussion, sped the job up a lot. Sadly the 1 1/2" core bit has worn quite quickly, I bought the set just over a year ago but went through a period of 6 months with no use at all. I'm quite disappointed with how quickly it has worn as my last set (non percussive) lasted for over 5 years. I won't be buying a Marcrist replacement.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Incomplete set The dust extractor part doesn't fit any of my vacuum hoses and no adapter available anywhere. I use duck tape to tape it onto my vacuum cleaner before use. You don't get a centre pilot drill bit and screwfix don't sell the correct length anyway. You can't use the pilot with the dust extractor anyway as it covers up the hole. so very strange. However, once you master coring without a pilot and you carry plenty of duck tape then the actual drilling is very quick and clean.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Incomplete set (no pilot bit) This set is incomplete as it does not come with a Pilot drill so is about a useful and a car without wheels. Screwfix do not even appear to sell a pilot drill for this set. I had to use the dust extraction unit with my existing core bits. The dust extraction element of the set worked well. It is madness that this set is sold without the Pilot bit so on that basis i would avoid this set.

Why do you not supply a pilot drill with the extraction kits

I am looking to upgrade my antiquated core drill set with extraction and the Marcrist kit looks promising, the issue I have is there is no pilot drill. I have looked for it here and elsewhere and looks like another £30 for the 300mm pilot drill it needs?
Asked by: Mickygas
Yes, unfortunately the longer length pilot drill was not incorporated in to this kit, the only way to obtain it is to purchase it separately, Our part number is 310.10.0015 - you may be able to find it on sale at some other companies who may be slightly cheaper than the prices you have quoted, our list price is shown on our website with the additional extras of carriage and VAT

Dust extraction

Is the dust extraction through the core extension sufficient?
Asked by: Dan2071
Yes, When using the PC650 with the extension there will be sufficient dust extraction. When drilling complete the first coarse of bricks / blocks without the extension rod then add the extension rod on the second coarse. if you need any more information please give us a call on 01302 890888

whats the difference

whats the difference between item 7999f and this one? i need to invest and am a heating engineer. cheaper ones last me 8 months, fed up now need a good one
Asked by: Gasfixer
Good Morning Thank you for your enquiry, with regards to the two core kits the difference is that the PC650 cores are designed to be used with percussion drills such as our DDM1 machine 2510H and 5259H. These allow faster drilling times especially when used with the dust extractor adaptor if you were to use other cores and our DCU650 cores on percussion settings then this would damage the segments. the PC650 is designed so that this does not happen.
