Rated 4 out of 5 by from Pretty good LED bulb I got this to replace the 300w halogen 118mm in my 20 year old flood light, which is surprisingly still going strong. Build: It seems like a really well made, weighty bulb with a balancing ballast inside it. The LEDs go all the way around the barrel (about 50 of them i think) with a tube of glass to protect them. The LEDs at the back and on top are reflected so the better your reflector the more efficient this bulb will be. The light quality: The light is on the warm side compared to the halogen I had. For this purpose I prefer the cool white from my halogen as in general cool white seems "brighter" for the same lumens and also cool white lights up the flowers with a nice bright vibrancy than does the warmer white light from this LED. Light strength: My 300w halogen is brighter but not by much maybe 15% brighter. It lights up my patio very well and reaches the shed (15m away). Of course it is dimmer there but there is more than enough light to see well. It also casts a light on the trees 20 metres away. What is very strange to me is my torch which is rated for only 200 lumens, when on its widest angle does a similar job to this 118mm bulb. If I focus the light on my torch to a narrow beam then the light is much brighter than the 118mm bulb. Conclusion: Given the price of electricity and the price of this bulb is it worth swapping the halogen for this LED bulb? It depends. If you plan on having it on for hours at a time then definitely as it requires about 120 hours to pay for the bulb at it's current price. But if it is for occasional use like in my case then no unless I forget it on for hours which I have done in the past. The return on your money for the cost of the bulb will take many, many years even at 30p per kilowatt if you use it 10 mins a day. I use it even less than that. Also, there is the possibility that this LED bulb will die before it pays for itself.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from They look great and work well I bought two of these beauties to replace the old over bright "nuclear powered" 400-watt bulbs. They fit the older units and work a treat! Now I won't be so worried about getting calls from the local power station asking me to turn the lights off! ;-) I cant really comment on reliability as they are just fitted.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent performance Bought to replace a blown 400 watt quartz halogen bulb on an automatic flood light. Gives a quite adequate spread of light from its mounting point about 12 feet above ground level, but only consumes about 4% of the energy the old bulb used. One of the most effective LED replacements in lighting I have come across.

using this LED bulb in a R7 filament standard lamp.

If I fit this non dimmable bulb as a direct replacement for a R7 filament bulb, will it actually work - although not dimming the light - through the dimmer switch. Or do I need to change the switch to an on/off type
Asked by: bigdaddy
Hello bigdaddy, You won't need to change the switch if you don't wish but unless it is turned to full the dimmer will not operate this lamp. if the dimmer is an old Leading Edge dimmer though then you may cause the lamp to buzz so I would recommend changing the switch as well. Thank you for using Q&A

is this a direct replacement for the 120w halogen bulb in my pir security light ?

Asked by: screwfixy
Hello screwfixy, That depends on the length of the lamp in your PIR light and if it will accept LED lamps as replacements. Thank you for using Q&A (CW)
