10mm cable

Hi Guys

Going to replace my old girls shower and I think that the current supply cable is in 6mm. Going to replace the cable with 10mm but the existing looks quite big. The outside diameter is 13mm. Does this sound like 6mm or could it already be 10mm ????

The live and neutral is stranded and the earth is solid if this helps.

Any advice welcome

P.s You guys are funnier than some of the plumbers !!!!!

The outside diameter across 10mm twin & earth cable is 17mm, but every manufacture has slightly different sizes of sheath and this is an inaccurate way of deciding CSA of the cable.

You may be as well to go down to B&Q or somwhere like that, where they sell both coils of 6mm and coils of 10mm. Then you know which is which. They are easy to spot the difference once you know what the difference is between them.

The Solid earth points towards a 6mm cable, because a 10mm cable should have a Stranded earth core in it.

Would I be right in saying that 6mm is about 1.7mm thick, and 10mm is about 2.9mm thick at it's diameter(wire only), and that this is a reasonable way to ascertain the csa, or am I way off (again) ?

Handyandy - really

best way to check the size of any cable, if you are unsure is to get the relavent size of crimp lug and try them for size. pop into your local wholesaler and ask them for a 10mm & 6mm lug, it wont be worth the paperwork so they probably wont charge you. try them and the best fit wins.

Hello PP

Earth's are not required to be as big as phase cables, only neutrals need be the same size as a phase cable in a single phase circuit.
