Can I emulsion {water based) over a coverstain primer

Asked by: JDDEVEL
Hello, thank you for your enquiry. The Zinsser Cover Stain primer can be over painted with an emulsion, you just need to allow the Cover Stain to dry for a minimum of 2 hours prior to applying your emulsion paint. If you are using the Cover Stain to block a stain, as with any stain block primer it is generally good practice to prime the whole area or up to a natural break, rather than just spot priming the stain, especially on a ceiling otherwise your spot primed area may be visible when viewed from certain angles. We trust this answers your question.

can this paint be used on top of emulsion which has mould showing through

Asked by: richt2
Zinsser Cover Stain is an excellent primer for this purpose. It has great hiding power to cover any mould related staining and seal the mould stains within the surface to prevent them from spoiling your decorative finish. As Zinsser Cover Stain does not kill existing mould, we recommend to treat the affected areas first with an anti-mould/mould killing solution. Prime all stained areas with one coat of Zinsser Cover Stain and allow a minimum of 2 hours drying time before applying the desired top coat finish. Zinsser Cover-Stain is compatible with most decorative top coats. As a system we recommend the application of two full surface area coats of Zinsser Perma-White Interior Matt (product code: 1289G for 1 litre, 3939g for 2.5 litre) or Satin (product code: 13040 for 1 litre, 62096 for 2.5 litre) allowing 2 hours between coats. Zinsser Perma-White Interior is excellent for areas with high humidity and contains a biocide which offers up to 7 years protection from future mould and mildew growth. Zinsser Perma-White must be left as the final finish for the biocide to be effective.

I want to prime an interior wooden door that has previously been painted with a stain. Would Coverstain be the most suitable product to use, or would BIN be more suitable for this?

Asked by: SWWW
As doors are high wear areas subjected to a lot of knocks Zinsser B-I-N primer would be our best recommendation as it offers the best adhesion and stain blocking for this application without the need to sand down. We recommend that the surface is cleaned thoroughly first with a good wash down with hot water/liquid detergent solution, rinse with warm water not detergent than when dry a good wipe over with methylated spirit to make sure the surface is spotless. The BIN Primer can be overcoated after a minimum of 45 minutes with a product such as Zinsser Perma-White (13040) or most conventional decorative finishes

Can this be used as a primer for painting over Upvc?

Asked by: bigdog21
Zinsser Cover Stain is suitable for application to uPVC, however it would not be not our first choice primer for this type of surface. Our go to primer for uPVC is Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 (Product Code: 10135 for 1 litre. 10136 for 2.5 litre. 4224G for 5 litre). Please ensure the surface to be painted is clean, dry and free of mould, mildew, dirt etc prior to application. Our recommedations prior to applying the Bulls Eye 1-2-3 are to prepare the surface by lightly abrading with fine sandpaper and degreasing with methylated spirits. Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 can be overcoated after a minimum of 1 hour with most conventional water-based or oil/solvent-based topcoats, allowing you to complete your project quickly and effectively.

can this product be applied to varnished tongue and groove hallway as a primer before painting with a topcoat.

Asked by: Nas5
Our best recommendation for a primer to achieve an excellent key to a varnished surface in a high wear area such as a hallway would be the Zinsser B-I-N Shellac Based Primer Sealer (29661), there is no need to sand down prior to applying this primer, providing the surface is clean, dry and free from any waxes, polishes or contamination that would stop the primer from keying. The Zinsser B-I-N Shellac Based Primer Sealer can be over coated after a minimum of 45 mins with your chosen topcoat, water based or solvent based.

Will this cover mildew in my bathroom

Asked by: Needshelp74
Hi. Thank you for your enquiry. Cover Stain has fantastic hiding power and will certainly block out the dark staining caused by mould & mildew. Before applying a stain blocker it would be advisable to kill off the mould & mildew using a proprietary mould & mildew killer or fungicidal wash. Once you have applied the Cover stain and allowed it to dry (minimum of 2 hours) you can top coat it with your chosen decorative finish, oil or water based. For prolonged resistance against mould & mildew we would advise using Perma-White Interior (62096) as your finish coat as this contains a biocide that resists mould & Mildew. I hope this information helps.

Can this be used as a primer on MDF?

Asked by: MrsHep
Our best recommendations for priming bare MDF are to use either Zinsser B-I-N Shellac Based Primer (29661) or Bulls Eye 123 Primer Sealer(10135). The Bulls Eye 123 is water based and can occasionally, depending on the MDF result in a small amount of nibbing up, once the Bulls Eye 123 is dry this can be lightly abraded and a 2nd coat applied if required. Both the Zinsser B-I-N Primer and Bulls Eye 123 Primer can be overcoated with any conventional decorative topcoat, water based or solvent/oil based; the Bulls Eye after a minimum of 1 hour the BIN after a minimum of 45mins. The BIN is for interior projects only, the Bulls Eye 123 suitable for interior or exterior projects.

will this primer sealer hold back nicotine from cigarette smoking

Asked by: 1billm
Hi. Thanks for your enquiry. Cover Stain will certainly cover nicotine stains. B-I-N primer (10130) will also cover the stain but in addition will also block out the odour. Before applying any of the above we would always advise you ensure that the surface has prepared sufficiently i.e., with hot soapy water then rinsed with fresh warm water to remove detergent and when dry a good wipe with methylated spirit. I hope this helps
