This is not an exceptional piece of equipment, but in the right hand's it can be very effective. Ask some simple questions.
Will this equipment clearly identify a criminal? Ans. Only if they stand 1 meter from the camera, a stated range of 20m is impractical. Placing the camera above eye height to prevent vandalism means the camera is a casual observer of events, especially as a pedestrian generally looks at the ground ahead, not at the camera. To put this in perspective, if a camera included in this kit is in the correct position a car registration number is only readable in daylight at 5 meters, number plates cannot be read at night.
These cameras are great at detecting wind and rain, they have difficulty with reflective surfaces like car body work, glass tables and polished surfaces. Changes in light trigger the recording system, no amount of adjustment will cure this as the system is too crude, move the camera or object or accept false triggering.
Is this a good deterrent? Yes. At night the camera's have a circular red glow from the IR LED's, giving reassurance that a casual theft is less likely. A potential burglar is less likely to want their photo taken, making this system better then a burglar alarm.
Will getting a better camera improve the system? The wide angle lens distorts the image and the video compression is not good. I'm not sure if the camera does the compression or the box, this system doesn't get close to the quality we expected in the 1990's on good old television. It's better then CCTV systems of 10 years ago, but only just.
Other uses: I have Glis-Glis (edible door-mouse) in the garage, and am using the camera to identify their point of entry, having paid £400 to repair past damage this is the ideal tool for the job. Obviously other pets/pests like cats, rats and squirrels can be studied, but spring watch won't be knocking on your door for the footage.
Imagination is required: for the bored teenager this could be incorporated into a robot with a hose pipe to chase cats away, or water the plants whilst you sip a cool drink next to the pool.
Protect those you love and be cautious, capturing a naked child with this equipment could put you in prison, so allowing this system unrestricted access to your home and the internet must be considered. There is nothing like being watched by a hacker as you load your car with luggage, especially when you've paid to let them do it.

I live in New Zealand and have had a Swann system installed before. I was on holiday in the UK at Christmas and saw the price of this unit and decided to upgrade.
This system is very easy to install. The camera image is great. Network connectivity and is not difficult if you follow the very well written user manual. (It does require an account with Swann to get the quickest setup)
As mentioned in a previous review, the actual DVR unit is a bit noisy, but mine is locked away (to prevent theft of the evidence) and therefore not an issue.
If you are looking for a good all round Video surveillance system without spending a small fortune this item is not to be overlooked.

i have just put this system in !!! its easy !!!
if you follow the instruction !!!
cams are good on 4-6 meters
lots of length on the cable.
you need to set up a gmail email account and register with swann for a ddns ip address.(this is all in the instructions)
the ip address you put into your iphone or ipad is the dvr ddns ip address!! (you get this when you register) this was the only thing i had a problem. port is 9000
the email alert is very good.
it will take longer to put the wiring in and hide it all but it is 100% plug and play and follow the instructions.
i also had to call swann as i did not set a password in the set up wizard and was connected to a person in the uk in under a min.
hope this helps anyone out
