Spear and Jackson Ratchet Twist Secateurs
I've been using these to prune some old and thick stemmed roses and they are fabulous. It's made very quick work of what was taking ages with my old secateurs. I wish I'd bought these years ago.

You need big hands
These ratchet secateurs are good at cutting through branches, but the twisting handle takes some getting used to and does not seem to make it any easier to use. The handles are quite far apart and this makes it difficult for someone with smaller hands to use. I have quite big hands and found it more difficult to get a good squeeze on the tougher branches. Will not buy secateurs with a twisting handle again.

This was bought to replace a Burgon and Ball ratchet secateur that had lasted about 18 months of use before the non replaceable blade snapped. These secateurs are easier and more comfortable to use and just as capable of cutting through thicker branches, and cost less. So far I am very happy with them, I just hope they last a bit longer than the B and B ones did. I would definitely recommend them.
