Rated 1 out of 5 by Dangerous Design Fault Bought the saw for minor work such as cutting thicker pieces that my scroll saw couldn't manage. The blade that came with the saw was totally hopeless and I ended up setting the saw on a shelf because it really didn't perform well even after several attempts at getting everything set up correctly. Finally got a free weekend to look at the saw and try and get it to perform properly. I bought a few blade for the saw which did make a massive improvement on the performance of the saw even though due to the underpowered motor the blade would easily bog down. I noticed that after only a few cuts the guard would stick in whatever posistion it was in during the cut. Which meant that the guard could not be raised or lowered which is not only a frustration but a major safety issue. I read some of the other reviews on Screwfix and elsewhere online about this model of saw and seen that I was not alone in this issue. The guard rides using a plastic toothed cog on a plastic toothed rail which will clog with dust. I used a dust extractor on every cut but the dust extractor port is on the bottom wheel where as the guard rail is on the top wheel so dust extraction is doing very little to prevent dust from getting into the guard mechanism. Only way to fix the sticking guard is to remove the top wheel and then the guard and clean it out using a wire brush and put it back together again which isn't difficult but is very time consuming and very frustrating when you have to do it after a few cuts. Called Scheppach's customer service who were not particularly pleasant or helpful and their attitude was that they could do nothing about the way in which the saw was designed but they would send me new wheels and guard parts which would be exactly the same as what I have and therefore would create exactly the same fault. The customer service person also suggested the fault was occurring because I was not using dust extraction which I was and was laughable given the dust extraction unit I was using was also made by them so by proxy they were saying their own dust extractor was poor which it is but that's for another review. I didn't expect much from this unit given it's price and it does perform fairly well given it's limitations once a decent brand name blade is installed but I cannot keep or use a saw that needs to be taken apart and cleaned after 3 or 4 cuts due to a bad design. At the end of the day the safety guard (which also contains the guide bearings) should be freely movable which it isn't and not prepared to put personal safety needlessly at risk. 14 Jun 2016
Rated 4 out of 5 by Not great but could be I've had this a couple of months now and although it cuts pretty good there are a few problems, plastic leaver on fence snapped, should be metal not plastic, the adjustable blade guide gets stuck because of a biuld up of saw dust in the plastic runner and can take sometime to clean although if using dust extractor this is eliminated, time should be taken to set the saw up and would advise changing the saw blade as the one it comes with isn't great. for the money paid its a good little saw 16 Apr 2016

Rated 4 out of 5 by Impressive for the price Bought for wood turning and general DIY. Considering the price of this machine I wasn't too hopeful, but I have to say I am impressed. Assembly instructions were a little unclear, but once I had it set up (the blade was already well aligned), I was surprised at how quietly it runs! In my first few shots on it the locking rip fence was disappointing, but expect I can modify this to perform better. Overall feels a little bit delicate, but for the price, I am really pleased and would recommend unless you have money to burn! 8 Mar 2016

Answer:
Hello The maximum cutting depth is 80mm , how ever , if most of your cuts are this depth you would need to go up to the hbs 300 which has a depth of cut of 175mm . Thank you .

Answer:
Hello I have tested this machine with various timbers and blades , for deep ripping up to 80mm you will need a ripping blade 12mm wide with 4 teeth per inch , the length is 1400 mm , with this blade i ripped acurately 75mm oak with no problem , as always when deep ripping you must let the blade do the work nice and steady .

This is a great little hobby bandsaw . Thanks for your interest .

Provided I got a metal cutting blade - if those are available for this product - is it capable of cutting 3-5mm steel?

Answer:
HI The hbs 20 is not suitable for cutting steel as it does not have the power or the correct speed for metal cutting , please have a look at the basa 3 1 hp variable speed bandsaw . this would be more suited to your needs .

thank you for your enquiry .

Answer:
HI 230v is standard voltage in Europe , uk supply is 240 v standard + / - 6% , 230v + 6% = 243.80v , 230v - 6% = 216v . 230volt motors will run between these tolerances and are completely okay for 240 Volt UK supply.
