Rated 5 out of 5 by No nonsense interior varnish It's a good clear varnish. Being water based there is virtually no smell and washing out brushes is dead easy. Touch dry very quickly, hard enough to handle or cut back in a couple of hours. End result is excellent. Excellent value at the original price, now even better! 31 May 2016
Rated 4 out of 5 by A Bargain I used this to protect a laser printed poster mounted on MDF and got an excellent result though I can't say if would work with an inkjet print it did the job for me. 26 Apr 2016

Rated 5 out of 5 by Way Better than expected I've been looking to try water-based products for a while but held off as there seem to be many poor reviews. However the quick dry aspect and and a lack of time forced me to take the plunge and I'm glad I did. I Applied this varnish to an Oak Sill and I am very impressed with the results. It goes on beautifully, just like traditional oil based varnishes, brushes out nicely and dries to a great finish. and there's no awful stink hanging around for days. I'm a convert, from now on this is what I'll' be using to varnish things. Some say the sheen is not as good as oil based but I compared it to an oil based piece in another room and it's just as good. 8 Dec 2015

Answer:
Hi Bill2017,
The original finish should of course be sanded in order to provide a key for the new one. Sanding back to bare wood is best.
Since applying a new coating over an existing one can sometimes result in reactions causing bubbling and other unwanted effects, it would be best to test the new varnish on an inconspicuous area first.
Thanks for using Screwfix Q&A.
