Rated 5 out of 5 by Great lawnmower This lawnmower was easy to assemble and provides a great cut. It starts very easily 25 Apr 2016
Rated 4 out of 5 by Very happy. I bought it on Saturday, the assembly took around ten minutes, it started first pull. Engine feels strong and cuts the grass perfectly. the range of adjustment is perfect for my lawns. very happy indeed. 25 Apr 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great Value For Money Very easy to put together, took just ten minutes. After filling with oil and petrol it started third pull. Simple to operate controls - though personally, I don't like the way the engine stops if you release the throttle bar. I would prefer a tick over with a stop button. Self drive work smoothly and at just the right speed for me - I'm 6 ft 4 in, so have quite a large stride. Smaller people may find it a little fast? Have cut the lawn twice since purchase so cant really comment on or rate reliability yet - I'll do this after I've had it a month or so. Over all great value for money while on special offer. 22 Apr 2016
Rated 4 out of 5 by Good little mower Good value product. Well made. Only niggle is the fierce take up on self propelling. Would be helpful to have a graded take up. 15 Apr 2016

The two mowers look very similar in specification. This one doesn't appear on Mountfield's own website, but the SP414 does. http://www.mountfieldlawnmowers.co.uk/products/lawnmowers/petrol-lawnmowers/sp414-hp-39cm-hand-propelled-lawnmower

Answer:
I don't think there is any difference at all. Screwfix appear to have a deal with Mountfield to have their own exclusive model numbers. I just bought one of these on the current price promotion as it beat the best SP414 price I could find anywhere.

Answer:
Further to my previous answer I have unpacked mine today and discovered that the SP164 I bought from Screwfix has a 2 year warranty. There are 2 year warranty stickers on the box and on the mower itself. There is a stipulation on the warranty card that it has to be serviced by a Mountfield dealer after the first year for the extended warranty to be valid but I believe the SP414 only has a 12 month warranty. Also the Screwfix description is slightly inaccurate in describing it as 2.72 hp. The sticker on the machine says power is 1.55kw at 2,800 rpm which converts to 2.08 hp (mechanical). The SP414 is the same.

Oil

Does the mower come ready to use or do I need to buy engine oil as a review from diydoctor states it doesn't come with oil?

Thanks
Nick

Answer:
You need to buy engine oil separately with it. I bought the 96875 No Nonsense Engine Oil at £3.99 which is the best value I could find.

Answer:
First, gather the equipment you need, get some cheap disposable aluminium foil baking trays (pound shop ones will do fine), a funnel and plenty of kitchen roll and possibly sand in case of spillage, it is also preferable to wear disposable gloves too.

Next, run the mower for a few minutes to heat the oil up (thins it out so pours easier), then move the mower to level ground, place the foil tray next to the mower, remove the oil filler cap, and carefully but swiftly tip the mower over sideways to pour the oil out into the tray, being careful to avoid spillage onto the ground.

When it is empty of oil, place it back down on its wheels, wipe up any dribbles, then place the funnel over the oil filler hole and pour in 450ML of SAE30 grade engine oil (10W30 acceptable in colder climates), clean off and replace the filler cap without screwing it in, then remove it again and check the oil covers the fill mark, if it does, replace the cap. Pour the old oil into a suitable container and dispose of at a council waste depot.
