Makita DFR550Z 18V Li-Ion Cordless Auto-Feed Screwdriver - Bare 4 5 1 1
Good Valve and Effective I'd read a few bad reviews about the Makita, but given the brand is strong and the price was good for this bare model I thought I'd give it a go. So, I've done about 4000 screws with this gun and its speeded up my board tacking massively. The issues highlighted in other reviews were mainly concerned with jamming, this does happen, but only for a reason, there's no fault with the gun, its just id say a bit sensitive to poor use/workmanship. If you set up the screw length correctly and adjust if you have problems, then set up the depth gauge following a bit of trial and error it works great. Id say its not as good as the more expensive models, especially the design of the head or tip is too large, so if it does jam you end up with a screw driven into the inside of the head which is tricky to free. But this will only happen if its not set up correctly. You also have to watch not to put the driver into reverse by accident then wonder why the screws don't go in. The head has angled corners to do close in screws, these will need to be finished off with a normal screw gun. The drill must be kept in line with the screw to drive it perfectly...but that's obvious. Makita could design a better head that allows closer to corner work and has less frame to get jammed in. Like their competitors have. Also, mine didn't come in a carry case although that's mentioned in the specification. This is really annoying as who want to leave tools banking around the back of the van. So if you want to spend £200 rather than £500 and you are probably a more occasional user then this is a good screw gun. If you buy it for your plasterers and their a bit 'bull in a china shop' about tacking then you may hear a lot of swearing about jams. 26 Oct 2014
