Rated 4 out of 5 by Great for fast floor fixing! I bought one of these last year and used it to fix a very large area of chipboard flooring in a big master bedroom. I've also just finished boarding out the loft with it (and have plans for future use). I reckon I used about 600 screws for the bedroom and am SO glad I didn't have to set them manually. With this little guy, you simply pull the trigger, then point and push. A real time-saver and, when used correctly, results in a good, strong fixing. Once you're used to it, you can even keep the motor running and simply move along a row of boards (for example), just pushing down as you go. I think this really is a great tool, only let down by issue 5, below (and that, hopefully, will be dealt with in the future). A few points to note: 1) Don't be shy or go at it half-hearted. Push firmly and smoothly until the screw is fixed. If you ease off part way through, the driver bit will chatter against the screw-head resulting in a) a poor fixing and b) massively increased bit-wear. 2) This tool will allow you to fix flooring fairly close to a wall (for example) but is quite long, so not suitable for tight spaces such as under in the eaves of your loft. That said, it still took the bulk of the pain out of fixing our loft boarding. 3) Whilst you can use it very slightly off 90 degrees, it's best to keep it as near perpendicular as possible. Otherwise, the screw-head may not end up flush AND you'll be increasing the bit-wear as the screw will stop while the bit's still spinning in it (horrible noise!!). 4) I used Floor-Fix collated screws (Quote No: 50954), which are nice because of their 'anti-jacking' feaature. However, they require Pozi-2 bits, rather than the Philips#2 that are supplied with the unit. Check you have the right bits for the right screws!! 5) Replacement driver bits are not especially cheap or easily come by! Until I became practiced at using this driver, I managed to inflict quite a lot of wear on the bits (I wore 2 out!!). Prices seem to vary between £12 & £18 for three, PLUS they don't appear to be in ready-supply. Makita make a wide range of bit sizes (these are 157mm) and most distributors don't seem to stock the entire range, so have to order them in. THIS is why the 6843 didn't score well for me on the 'Value' and, thus, 'Overall' ratings. So, if you're a novice (& likely wear out bits, like me) and have a lot of screws to fix, I'd recommend getting a small stock in BEFORE starting work. You don't want to be sitting there with 200 quids' worth of driver and a 1000 collated screws all ready to go, and then find you've suddenly no means of driving them ;-) Surprisingly, Screwfix don't currently (as at April, 2009) supply replacement bits. However, after I suggested it would be sensible to stock the consumables for the products they sell, they agreed and have passed this onto the team responsible for deciding what goes in the Screwfix catalogue. Maybe, by the time anyone reads this, these parts will be in stock - go check... Hope this helps anyone thinking of buying. 16 Apr 2009
