I bought one of these instead of the rotating anti-downdraught cowls that are a good deal more expensive.
This cowl made no difference at all to the downdraught of the constant "bonfire" smell in the room when the stove wasn't in use - when I put my hand at the bottom of the chimney the downdraught could easily be fealt on the skin.
I landed up taking this one off and putting a spinning cowl and it the smoke smell went within 24 hours. There doesn't appear to be any downdraught at all with the new one fitted.

I bought two of these to stop water entering the property. They look good and are easy to fit. I would recommend attaching the straps before climbing on to the roof. Make sure you use roof ladders over the apex for maximum safety.

Having suffered with rain getting down the chimney and into our woodburner, we decided to fit a cowl to the chimeny pot and remove the anti-bird wire basket we had in place. Having hunted around for something suitable, we came accross this item in screwfix and one was ordered for collection the following day from our local branch. It is very easy to install, if you don't mind heights and removing your hand from the ladder to fix! A sturdy jubilee clip fits around your pot's diameter and secures the cowl in place. It seems durable, well finished and will fit a wide variety of pot diameters. On ours it sits on top of the pot, but for those with a smaller diameter pot it will sit over it without any problem. All in all a good item at a reasonable price, that will keep the birds off and keep the majority of rain out too.
