Rated 3 out of 5 by from Off-white colour Why oh why design a product to be mounted on ceilings and manufacture it in a totally off-white, disgusting brownie/grey colour plastic? The picture online is not representative of just how off-white the product really is. It stands out a mile away on a nice new white ceiling! This was a direct replacement of the same model purchased ten years ago and is more off-white than the original product its replacing. If you don't have access to the ceiling void above the smoke alarm then the surface mounting kit doubles the depth of the device. Surely a GSCE design student could have come up with a better mounting method. Why would you want a smoke alarm to hang down over 70mm from the ceiling? Whilst I'm sure the product is perfectly functional, its as if they've actually gone out of the way to make it look so bad.

Is it BS5446 compliant?

Asked by: Mudbone
The BS5446 is the standard specification for heat alarms, and fire and carbon monoxide alarms for deaf and hard of hearing people. The 670MBX is an ionisation smoke alarm and complies with the BS EN 14604 standard, which details the requirements of performance criteria, test methods and manufacturer's instructions for smoke alarms that work using scattered light, transmitted light, or ionisation technologies.

Is this a suitable replacement for the BRK 650MBX and will it fit the same baseplate?

Asked by: stuco
The BRK 670MBX Dicon Alarm with 9V Battery Backup is an ionisation smoke alarm, which is better at detecting fast flames and is more suitable for bedrooms. The BRK 650MBX is an optical alarm, which is better to detect slow smouldering fires and is more suitable for hallways and stairs. You can go for any BRK 600 or 700 seres optical smoke alarm and it will fit the same baseplate as the BRK 650MBX detector.

battery life

I have a holiday home and turn off the electricity when I am not there, sometimes for several months at a time. When I do this will the battery go flat so that I will keep having to replace the battery every time I turn the power back on?
Asked by: pike123
Yes, the battery of the BRK 670MBX (679) Dicon Ionisation Alarm with 9V Battery Backup may go low as the detector is running on the battery only. We advise to keep the mains power on as the battery is a back-up only.
