Replacing old alarm on artexed ceiling so wanted to get it in the same spot. Plasterboard clashed with the tall, sticky-out plug in the centre so had to cut plasterboard away. That wasn't enough because the joist clashed with the plug so had to chisel some wood away too. A right palaver! If you want to install one of these with a joist in the centre spot, buy the base pattress as well.
Also, tested with smouldering paper and it sounded, eventually. Pressed the button and it took 5 seconds to go quiet. One minute later it alarmed again. That button press is supposed to make it ignore smoke for a clearing period of ~10mins.
I would recommend Kidde Firex KF2 or Aico instead.

It goes off about twice a week of its own accord. Have had to give up and disconnect.

Bought 3 of these alarms about 3 years ago and in summer one on lower hallway began false alarming(scaring my dog to death) changed batteries but became worse constantly alarming so has been disconected, not very good.

Bought this 3 years ago as this type was supposed to give no nuisance alarms. But it was the only one which did. When it alarmed daily I changed the battery to no effect.
Stick with the ionisation and heat alarms is my advice
