Rated 4 out of 5 by Bosch GKS 85 235mm Circular Sa good saw but poor packaging from bosch the box it comes to store it in is a bit flimsy 9 Jul 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Jolly good saw I bought this saw as I do quite a lot of work with heavy timber in the hard landscaping industry and needed something powerful and accurate. Makita is generally my power tool brand of choice however I new I'd need something more powerful than the 1550w the Makita 235mm saw offers. I had a hard time initially deciding between the Hitachi C9U2 and the Bosch as the Hitachi is significantly cheaper and only 200w less powerful. I bought both saws to do a comparison on features without actually cutting anything as I new I'd be returning one of them. I decided on the Bosch as it has 2200w of power, can easily be used with a guide rail system (the Hitachi needs an attachment which I couldn't find anywhere on the net, including asking someone at Hitachi), is incredibly sturdy and well made being made mostly from metal (the Hitachi doesn't seem as strong). It is easily adjustable and comes with a strong rip fence and 2 blades (one fitted and one in a box). The two bad points are: The L-Boxx, in my opinion is pretty average indeed compared to Hitachi' and Makita'. The tool rests on a flimsy piece of moulded plastic in the bottom of the rather weak L-Boxx held in place by a tiny piece of foam on the inside lid of the box. The spare blade stands loosely next to the tool and unlike the Hitachi's lovely sturdy box with a secure place for all accessories, the Bosch' accessories don't all have assigned spaces and bang around whenever the tool is moved. And It's also quite heavy, 700g more than the Hitachi. I've found the tool to be incredibly powerful and extremely accurate especially given it's size. The first job I used it on was to cut some sleepers for a retaining wall I was building (picture attached), as the height was not exactly 2 sleepers worth I had to cut 4 of them length ways in half. I was expecting a rough staggered cut as I had to cut one face then flip over and cut the next obviously. It managed this very easily and accurately, I was pretty impressed to tell the truth especially at how smooth the cut surface was. When shortening a sleepers length I cut through with the Bosch and do the rest with a hand saw, I've done this quite a few times now, most recently with the steps I built (picture attached). It also cuts thinner materials like ply and MDF very nicely, I like this tool a lot and have sung it's praises many times to people I know, Definitely recommended. Bought in March 16 Aug 2013
Rated 1 out of 5 by Sloppy work Bosch I bought this saw primarily for two reasons; Firstly, I believed Bosch professional range to be of high quality, and so choosing one would be a good investment, if a little pricey. Secondly there seem to be relatively few circular saws with a cutting depth as large as this, and I needed to rip 3" stock. On the plus side the saw is extremely powerful. It effortlessly glided through anything I put in its path. The L-boxx is nice, if a bit flimsy. Mine was also slightly damaged as the saw had come loose inside during transit. The build quality is solid, the lead is long and rubbery, and it's also a nice looking machine, but then perhaps that's down to personal taste. Unfortunately there is one major flaw in the design of this saw. The base plate does not have a straight edge on either side. If accuracy is even slightly important to you, do not buy this saw. I am now currently sending back my second one. After receiving the first and looking at the base plate, I thought, this can't be right, it's all bent out of shape, and sent it back only to receive a second with exactly the same fault. The deformation in the base plate was identical for both of the saws I was sent. I belive it to be a design flaw rather than a one off damaged item. If all you want to use this saw for is quickly and roughly cutting chunky wood, then by all means go for it, but as soon as you come to use the base plate guided by a straight edge, don't expect that line to come out straight. I spoke to Bosch about the problem and they claim to have had no other complaints, and almost seemed as though they didn't belive me. When I asked them to look at one for themselves they explained that was not possible. Odd, seeing as that make the things. Oh well, think I'll try the 9" Hitachi C9U2 next... fingers crossed! By the way ScrewFix were helpful and suprisingly efficient at sending the replacement saw, collecting the unwanted ones free of charge. Although I will think twice before buying Bosch again, I will definately be using ScrewFix in the future. 9 May 2011
